G'day from Adelaide!

I remember when I first signed up here for Qantas Club, thinking that would be all that would come of it.

Do you get your 20 JQ flights a year figure from 20 one-ways (10 returns) or 20 returns (40 one-ways)? I ask as I wanted to champion the great value of using the Jetstar Max bundle these days. It wasn't too long ago that a Max bundle cost a lot more than a Plus bundle, but these days, on a route such as the one you are flying it can be as low as $40 more, and for this you get double the Status Credits (SC), about 50% more points as a bronze (more as you gain status), an upfront/exit row seat and a little more flexibility in your ticket (there are a few other things but I feel these are the key selling points for the upgrade).

Looking at your situation, if you were just taking 20 one-way flights a year (ADL-CNS route) and using a Plus bundle on each, you could expect 300 SC, or enough to qualify you for Silver FF status. This in turn will give you a bonus 250 points per flight, or 5000 extra points a year. However, if you were to change to Max bundles on the route (assuming you could always get them for $40 more) you'd spend an extra $800/year but gain 600 SC (with a Loyalty Bonus you'd be within striking distance of qualifying for Gold) and 10,000 extra points a year. As a Gold FF member, your QP would be put on hold until you couldn't re-qualify again, the 600 SC/year would take you over the line in subsequent years and the amount of extra points you'd earn over a Bronze/Plus bundle member would be 22,500 (that's on top of the 16,000).

On one hand, spending an extra $800 a year can seem like so much more than renewing a Qantas Club membership for $442.80 every year, but I would consider the other benefits the Max bundle gives you that makes it seem quite enticing.

Of course, if you're effectively flying double what you posted per my first query, perhaps Platinum is within reach instead and those lovely Business/First class Lounges! :p

Welcome to the world of a points and status junkie!
This has just blown her mind. We are very good at the upsell (but for gain) on these boards ;)

Oh boy. I reckon you're right, and unfortunately it's too late because my qantas club membership has now been paid. I hadn't considered all of that because I really don't know very much about status credits, points and what different levels of membership gives you. I'm probably taking about 20 flights all up, inclusive of the returning flight to Adelaide. So 10 flights to Cairns, 10 flights back. Maybe less, it depends on how many wedding bookings I get (I'm a wedding singer)

I mean, the good thing is that after this year my membership costs around $400 and something per year (if I choose the two year plan)

I also can't believe how much you all know about points, different levels of membership etc. I'm so impressed! I didn't quite realise how much of a thing it is, but well worth it when you know what you're doing!

Hi Natt

No such thing as a silly question. J is the Fare Class for Business Class, so they use J Lounge as shorthand to mean the Business Lounge. Qantas run Domestic Business Lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, which are for people flying Business Class or Platinum Status (known as WP - Wanker Platinum). For international flights, your Qantas Club membership will get you into the Qantas International Business Lounge - and some of the others but you would need to check the other threads on that.

Other shorthand if you haven't worked it out, is QP - Qantas Pub, for Qantas Club

See you around the traps

Ooh thanks so much for the information! I didn't know what QP meant either, so thanks for that too ;)

While the wine tour is full.
The night before function may not be. Check out the meetings and social events thread for more info.
An opportunity for you to meet a number of out of towners.

Would have loved to, but I realised that I'll be in Cairns at that time unfortunately

It’s ok. It gets put on hold as soon as you qualify and extended at the other end.

You're better served buying the Club membership...

As much as I like Cocolat at Adelaide airport, it takes time (and money) to earn your way in by flying and buying fares mentioned in the earlier posts!

Phew! I trust that it's true, because you guys really know your stuff when it comes to this.

I just looked into the advantages of the bundles earlier.

The FlexiBiz is $55 and gets your into the QC lounge. It doesn't come with food in the air or baggage, and I always need baggage and so I'd have to purchase baggage on top of that, so you're looking at atlas $70+ just for lounge access with my usual 20kg, and no FF points accumulating.

The Flexi Plus is a bundle that I often get, but only when I'm a bit unsure of my dates. I get 800 points and 15 status credits each time. No access to the lounge though, unless it's an international flight. It's generally that or no bundle for me. I'm with Club Jetstar so with no bundle I simply pay $18 for baggage, $4.80 for a seat and that's it. Its why I thought it'd be more economical to join QC, especially when it's only around $400 each year after the first.

The Flexi Max is $95, comes with baggage and gets you into QC..but that's $95 each time! I don't like having to factor $95 in each time I fly to and from Cairns. I dunno..I felt like I may as-well just pay the Qantas Club fee upfront and never have to think about the money again until it's time to renew. I really like to pay things upfront and then not have to worry about them again for another year or so :)

But hey, I don't know that much about accumulating points, and maybe the cost of $95 Flexi max would've given me something extra.

And once you get your head around all of that, you will start to understand why here on AFF we subscribe to the mantra “ why fly direct, when you can connect?”
Once you accumulate enough for status, and begin to see the bigger Frequent Flyer picture, a whole new world of opportunity opens up.

but that's $95 each time

Jetstar bundles actually vary in value per distance and how much your ticket is selling for. They can be lower or more expensive on the same day... so it's always worth looking at all options if you are somewhat flexible and want to get the best deal.
