Gatwick chaos: Police 'could shoot down drone'

They may also suspect that it is more than just one, in which case they lose the capability to triangulate the signal to the shot down drone and may still not be able to open the airport

Gatwick operations reporting the drone equipment is 'industrial'. As anyone who's been to Gatwick knows it's more isolated than Heathrow in terms of being near built up areas and in theory you could plant twenty of these drones with programmed flight paths. They don't even need to be on the perimeter. This could run for days.

It looks like service at Gatwick has been partially restored, with 2 flights having landed this morning and one having departed. Not sure what has changed, perhaps they are taking advantage of a break in recent drone visits?

Totally not sympathetic ........tell Al Gore its all a myth why else would he be jetting around so much.

Shooting it down likely means they never find the owner.

They need to somehow track it (not triangulate as they are outsmarting security) physically.

I read they were worried about stray bullets if they tried to shoot it down. More than 1 drone implicated given battery life and maybe industrial rather than something off the shelf. There was some issue with jamming frequencies so that wasn't possible.

Maybe when the military got involved the drone operators decided to ski daddle. I seriously hope they get caught and receive the maximum penalty of 5yrs jail.

I think drones are cool and certainly have a place but I think they should stop selling drones until legislation catches up and security issues are solved around airports in particular. Although most people I think use them for good, I just don't trust those few idiots out there. I don't want to see anyone die in a plane as a result of a drone.

Given it’s impact and publicity, how long before we get copycats at other airports ?.

My youngest son is having to re-assess his plans with Gatwick closed again. The choices are tight and expensive as everyone is trying alternatives.

Discussion elsewhere that UK legislation *could* provision a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for this activity.

Hasn't a French company developed a drone that autonomously pursues and (net) captures other drones?

Given how I would feel being so inconvenienced by something like this I'd like to see anyone convicted of such acts be liable for civil damages. Imagine the effect of being sued by thousands of angry travellers… lol
