While we speculate, I love this one from the Onion article linked to above - the future of flying as we will know it. :D

These are a load of cough:mad:.
What an over reaction.
If the US had any decent intel they would of prevented this 'attack' from happening in the first place.
Now every single traveller on a US bound plane has to cop the burden.
Haha.
Joke.

This is starting to get beyond a joke. Where there is a will, there is a way. These terrorists will find a way around and there will be more laws and more inconveniences for the rest of us.
Only one way to solve this problem.

I hope to not travel to the US for a long time as these new measures are just ridiculous. There are many other places to take my tourist money to. There are going to be lots of bowel / bladder accidents as this one hour rule can easily extend to 2 -3 hours as planes have to circle airports at the last minute, wait for an aerobridges to open up etc.

Will airlines allow passengers to use the toilets upon landing, and prior to disembakation, if passegers really need to go? I can see the air sickness bag being used for other purposes now esp for the male species:shock:

+1
And, not been able to read a novel/magazine or listen to an iPod. This is crazy. 1+ hour to go to the toilet. Flying from Sydney to Canada/Mexico and then hop across might make more sense l think.

An act of terrorism is designed to cause panic and de-stabalise the local powers.
If the USA reaction is to make it prohibitively difficult to fly to the USA peple will travel to different countries for holidays. Do we need to take the kids on a PRISON flight to see disneyland in the states or could we see Mickey in HK or France.
These knee jerk reactions will not make passengers feel safer but they will hurt USA tourism.
I hope they fix this soon or I will not be going to conference in USA as planned, but will find a European meeting.
All this just as they were starting to get LAX service to be human. AAAArgh.

There was a great article posted about 2 year ago that examined tourism to the US since Sep-11.

I can't find it now but basically used statistics to show how many thousands of US jobs had been wiped out because of restrictive rules.

As I said earlier, I think the SYD-YVR flights are now going to become very popular.

Are they allowed to say what airport they are just about to land at?

Probably not. And don't even suggest looking out the window at the ground. Next thing we'll all be blindfolded and told to remove them only in the event of an emergency.

I doubt that they will. Most people flying to the USA are heading there to go to the USA I would posit. Also, LAX would seem to be a much more effective point for those wanting to conenct onwards rather than YVR

Maybe some might choose not to go at all, but I doubt that there will be large swathes of passengers hunting for Canada flights

Actually they had intel.Apparently the guy's father went to the US Embassy and warned them of his son's fanatic views. He got put on a list of terrosist suspects-the TIDE list but they still gave him a visa then he was not flagged on the flight.

This is true, according to the New York Times. If you can't make the current system work, will a few more bandaids make it all better?

I've cancelled our upcoming SYD-SFO-FRA-CDG ticket on UA/LH today, and rebooked on SQ via SIN. The idea of even greater scrutiny and inconvenience at the airport and onboard is unbearable, and besides, it's time we tried out the much-vaunted R-class on the 380.

I won't be traveling to the USA on a commercial airline for the foreseeable future.

I wonder if passengers in premium cabins will face such strong restrictions, or if they’ll be overlooked while reading a book on descent?
Good question, especially if it happens to be a book about dissent.

I doubt that many people would voluntarily choose to go via USA to get to Paris and that those that do are probably doing it for specific needs and that these sorts of cancellations are likely to be small

I wasn't suggesting that many people would travel to Paris via the USA, I was stating that I personally had that particular itinerary booked because of my status with UA, but since the latest "troubles", I have rebooked via SIN with SQ.

Undoubtedly there will be few cancellations at all, because people seem to just give a deep sigh of resignation and tolerate whatever is imposed upon them. Air travel is vital to commerce, and some passengers have no choice but to grin and bear it. Leisure travellers will probably just sit tight and cop it too.

And in response to an earlier post, no, I don't think that passengers in F or C will be permitted to bend the rules. It would be quite a sight to behold, the Sky Marshals taking control of the cabin because the person in 2A wouldn't put their book away. You know you're visiting a police-state when...

Will be interesting on airlines such as Emirates which have no overhead lockers in first class and the hand luggage is stored on the floor

Dave

It says "no access to personal items." I assume this means you can still use the air sickness bag, read the inflight magazine (or the duty free magazine or entertainment guide or the menu you were given for the flight) or the safety card.

I assume this means you cannot pull out a pen to do the Sudoku in the inflight magazine, or whip out your wallet to see how much cash you have available to see if you can buy a certain something you saw in the magazine. And so on.

Otherwise, it's basically 1+ hour of dead nothing. Better brush up on those conversation skills, as well as hoping you get seated next to a sociable seat mate.

Moral of the story, complete Immigration and Customs declaration as soon as they are given to you. Also don't have that extra tea/coffee that can overfill your bladder prior to landing. ;)
