Going through international security Friday I observed a security worker approach 3 people, had them press button on remote with green & red light, can't rember which light that flashed, worker took them to full scanner machine depending on colour. I thought I heard worker acknowledge when certain colour came up, they were for scanner. Just courious how colour was determined. The 3rd person had the other colour to other 2.

Sounds like a random selection device for screening, designed to avoid bias or people squirming around the lines. You'll also see metal detectors now doing the same thing and beeping for those that get the drug/explosive wand.
It's a good idea because at places without it, I have about a 90% success rate avoiding them by perfectly timing when I finish re-packing my bag from security. If I can do it... :-)

Having said that the other day after it randomly selected me, they said it's ok theyre busy with someone else don't worry about it.. lol.

I generally avoid it by making eye contact. If you make them think it's not random anymore, that you have chosen them as oppose to the other way round, they generally wont select you... guess they think I'm a plant so someone else can get by.

I love that logic

The crazy thing is, it works most of the time. When it doesn't as I've already singled them out instead of the other way around, by the time I get to their station I have my bag open and am waiting for them to begin, so it's over very quickly.

Don't need a random select button for me-I ask to go through the body scanner.

Agree, it's easy to watch out the corner of your eye as you repack and time it right.

The worst is being a 34 year old with hip resurfacing (a type of replacement) and having to ask for it. Always raises their concerns and attracts a few more questions!
