I'm sure some AFF'ers deal with this regularly...

I'm driving up in a rental car for a change... and can't find an easy way to locate a service station near the airport.. Coming from Canberra I'll be heading in on the M5.....

 (Thanks in advance!)

Assuming you're going to Domestic, your closest one is the Caltex on O'riordan St o'riordan st haran st mascot NSW - Google Maps

Just head to the airport and it's a few minutes away from the Domestic terminal so not so far out of the way. There are also a couple of alternatives not much further on Botany Street, if you prefer a different servo.

There's a BP on General Holmes Drive (the continuation of the M5), on your left just after you go through the tunnel under the runway, and you can keep following General Holmes Drive to the domestic terminal.

I guess that's new - certainly the best option.

[Edit" It is new, it's under construction in this google image: Brighton-le-sands NSW - Google Maps ]

Thanks for the advice everyone!!!

Actually going to the International Terminal so I thik I'll stick with the Kingsgrove one serfty recommended.. then I can pretty much just head back the way I came and on to the airport! (I think!)

You have to be careful if going back out onto General Holmes Drive as the two left hand lanes become Southern Cross Drive, so you have to get across a few lanes to make the airport. A safer alternative is to use the airport perimeter road that runs by the Long Term Carpark.

If you're heading to International, your quickest/most convenient way is to take the Arncliffe exit off the M5, turn right on to the Princes Highway then left to Kyle and Duncan to West Botany St for this 7-11 servo.

Come out, right/left on to Flora Street, then left on to Marsh and you're at International.

I can't remember exactly when, but think it was built around/a bit over a year ago.
Hmmm.... My memory is failing me. I thought the service station has been there a little bit longer. It definitely was not there between 1986-1999. Oh well....

Actually it would be handy to compile a list of petrol stations near airports - especially on approach roads. As you are supposed to return rental cars with a full tank (or get charged a gouge rate of $2 per litre) it's handy to know where they are. Often you might be in a hurry to make your flight (or spend time in the QP!) and expect one to be on the approach roads but can often be disappointed.
I dropped off a car at PER yesterday and came in on the Tonkin Highway from the north and it plumb slipped my mind. Last time I fueled up in the city.

Most of the airports have fuel stations on site, Melbourne/Brisbane and Adelaide do, whilst Perth has the BP just to the north of the entry to domestic. For Sydney I generally use 1 Baxter Rd to the east of the airport, as its easy to get back to the airport.

Do also consider that you can do 15-20Km without getting hit with any fuelling fees , so where possible just fuel up en route; don't need to leave it until right at the airport

..... and if you do that the car will, statistically, still have more fuel in it when you drop it off than when you picked it up :!:

Yes I fill up in the last half hour if I can normally.

You're right about the fuel levels - they appear full but if it's anything like a Holden gauge it will stay on 'full' until there's half a tank and then drop like a stone!

Slightly OT I went to the ex-govt car auctions in Sydney recently - every single car I looked at (you could start them up) had next to no fuel in it. Do you reckon they go around siphoning the fuel out of the tanks before they sell at auction? With several hundred cars per week on sale they'd get a fair bit! Nah - too much of a conspiracy theory!

Exacly. There is no need to find the absolute closest petrol station to the drop off point, anything within 40(ish) k's will do.

To answer the OP's question (he's probably long gone by now), when I travel from Canberra to Sydney Int'l by rental car I take the Princes Highway exit off the M5 tunnel, and there are numerous servos along there, not a couple of kilometres from the airport.

Very quick and easy (and also cheap).
