My +1 and I are travelling on an around the world ticket with Star Alliance (approx 29000 miles) and I was wondering if it is worth join a reward program. Someone told me we might have enough points to go to NZ if we joined up before we went. If so do you join one of the airline programs of does SA have their own?

All the Star carriers run their own schemes, but you can earn and burn on all the other partners. Definitely worth joining UA or AC (and possibly others) as they both have 25,000 mile rewards available within Sth Pacific. Anywhere in Oz to anywhere in Sth Pac (NZ, Fiji, Samoa, Cooks, Noumea, Vanuatu, Tahiti etc).
Tahiti becomes more economically viable if you don't have an airfare as well as accom to fork out for ! :)

Worth looking at bmi also. 29k miles is enough for a v nice holiday, and M class (i assume you're on a RWSTAR) accrues at 100% across many carriers, even more if in premium classes. But be prepared to burn your miles quickly as no one quite knows when LH takes over BMI, per precedent set by Swiss Travel Club you wont lose your miles and your status and miles will convert to bmi on a 1:1 ratio - just LH Miles and More ain't nearly as fantastic value.
