Hi all,

this thread may be seen as heretical in a forum such as this, but I am hoping to create a refuge, an outlet, a sharing spot, for those that are either losing the love of flying, or are questioning their Faith.

I do not do this altruistically - I am suffering such a loss of faith, so hearing from others with such woes may help me see the light. Find comfort or ideas or direction.

This is not about attacking a certain airline, it is not about working the system, it is not about crying crocodile tears. But surely there are others who have both loved flying, but also see its other, damaging side.

Due to work and personal reasons I have spent the last few years mainly in the air. Great status, "perks", etc, but essentially IMHO it is just a horrible necessity that one tries to make bearable.

I cannot remember who posted the concept (sorry!) but it was essentially "the higher your airline status, the lesser your quality of Life". I have finally found the truth in that.

Just as per Alcoholics Anonymous, the first step is recognizing there is a problem. With alcohol, it is much more simple because it is universally seen as a bad habit. But here, with flying, things are more complicated, and there are so many (most) who truly think flying is great, and many aspire to true mega-mile frequent flying.

But I have had enough. I feel the weight it has had on my family. Time away from loved ones that can never be regained. I see my aging face and know that half the grey hairs sprouted whilst enduring yet another airport queue. I see the bulging stomach that cough food and the impossibility of routine, of exercise and so forth, that this lifestyle has brought. And I also see the folly of status runs, an end product of the fantastic success (economically) that airlines have had with their ever-enchanting goals they put before you to mesmerize us.

Anyway, I hope this year to change. Thus I have probably the opposite goal of most FFers. I want to DROP status. I start this year as a P1 with QF, a "Black" (WP) with Latam, and a "Diamond" (P1 equivalent) with Avianca. I have to do a couple of trips, but my new goal is to minimize everything. make every decision on price and true necessity, and absolutely minimize any travel.

I know most of AFF members will abhor this, but there must be others who are in a similar mind frame. This is where I hope those will speak out.

If you are jaded, or wavering, or questioning, this is the place to open up.

I coughing hate queues and airline food.

I'm getting to be the opposite.

I love flying more and more but yes I do hate queues. The plus side is I had 3 airline economy meals on recent EK flight and to be honest they were quite ok.

I am starting to really hate chasing points though as the points I have get me nowhere.

My principle New Year's resolution is to not be enticed into buying something (flights) I do not definitely need. No chasing status, no seizing on "really good deals", etc. Thall Shalt NOT Even Peep at the International Deals page!

The true test will come if/when a QF DSC offer pops up :(

Interesting I didn't chase WP renewal this year and in fact if I was gold I wouldn't have even got enough SC to maintain that BUT I'm very close to LTG so I will make sure I achieve that in 2019 and then it will be whoever has the BFOD

This past 12 months I’ve found the joys of top status on airlines and hotel chains and multiple flights/stays starting to wear thin. I find flaws in just about everything these days, which worries me. But then I observe Y pax walking past me when I’m sitting in my VA or QF J suite and commenting like: ‘wow, this is top class’ or saying ‘Oh, this must be my seat’ and pretending to sit in an empty one, in that age old gag. Then I remember to appreciate what I’m able to do, even if the queues, delays, etc get me down.

I have concluded chasing status is a mugs game. Just pay for what you want, when you want it. You’ll be better off in the long run. And the experiences will be of greater value, I reckon.

I do find the world weariness of some who complain about the food in J or the J lounges irritating when I have friends that are just so excited just to get into the QP and occasionally get to fly J

I know family would agree that they need to reduce their flying but it isn’t a choice thing when the work is located out of your home state. Status isn’t chased, it just occurs.

So you'd have Qantas Lifetime Gold and then purchase Virgin and Tiger airfares if they were cheaper?

Makes no sense to me. Lifetime Gold is there to be used when I don't have Platinum Status.

I passed on the QF double status credit run to NYC from Perth because the price was about $20,000 for the two of us to get 1440 status credits each in J.
I may be breaking out of that status cycle.

I abandoned status several years ago when my employer banned employees linking their frequent flyer accounts to their bookings.

The lack of SC from frequent work trips meant that it was far more economical to take the best fare I could find for leisure trips along with using points for long-haul.

I don't value domestic airport lounges as I aim to spend as little time as possible at airports in the first place. If I do find myself in one I'm usually uninspired by the food and eat out with the masses.

I've never been brand loyal to hotels. I try to spend as little time as possible at them. And the allure of free breakfasts/hotel lounges has never grabbed me. I'd much rather save cash through disloyalty and experience the best a city has to offer.

What sort of coughpy employer engages in that sort of needlessly punitive practice? They lose nothing from you getting FF points and SC from flying and in fact if they are members of Qantas Business Rewards or Virgin Velocity Accelerate they actually lose the points themselves for not having your FF number attached to the booking.

Frequent Flyer points are one of the few benefits an employee can receive without the employer incurring Fringe Benefits Tax, so they're basically just doing it to be dickheads because there's no practical reason they should forbid you collecting FF points (noting that govt fares often include only SC and not points though).

Government. No access to SC only fares.

I was more thinking about international bargains that come up - would probably always choose QF domestically unless there was a ridiculous difference and I can be quite flexible now

I understand that. I am weary, but I do remember when I loved getting into lounges and so forth.

Probably the most enjoyable part of travelling for me now is when I get to do so with my family - they travel infrequently enough that they really do love those "perks" :)

When I stumble into the BNE J lounge in the early morn as I do frequently, I usually grab just a takeaway coffee, maybe have a couple of sausages. And do not enjoy the time. But when my daughters are with me, they absolutely love making juices, snacking, etc etc. I really enjoy those visits!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I know you should never say never but I should have said I will NEVER fly Tiger by choice

Although I am happy having my QF LTG, I am equally happy to so far have a perfect LTNFV - Life Time Never Flown Virgin. If I broke that it would impinge upon my ability to freely rain scorn on them :)

I am VA Plat and QF Gold flying short domestic trips for last 2 years. Whilst initially it was great to go to the lounges, it gets bored after a while. Same old beer and wine, same old sandwich maker, same old free upgrade to J, etc. And because of all the travelling, I get tired all the time as I wake up really early for early flights, and any sickness I have took ages for me to get better.

So I ended up changing jobs so I don't fly anymore. Just started this week. I look forward to not going to the lounges for the sake of it.

This is the second thread you started on much the same topic in as many months: Sick of flying :(

Nothing seems to be changing or getting better.

It seems perhaps solution is straight forward... you've had enough and want ot spend more time with your family.

Return to Australia?
