What is the best way to get an upgrade, without paying for it? What is always working when you fly coach, but you want to sit in front. Any suggestions or secrets to share?

I guess the answer depends on the airline, but suggest that the main factors are:

1) Have status in the airlined FF program
2) Travel in peak leisure periods, such as school holidays, where there ay be overbooking of the economy cabin and free seats in the premium cabins.

There must be a Great God/ess of Flying out there, somewhere.

But honestly, have been travelling intensively (compared to previous patterns) on international routes for the past few years - have always applied for points upgrades on long-haul sectors:
  • have had upgrades declined,
  • have never been offered a complimentary op-up,
  • and the cabin into which I wanted to be moved has at times even been close to empty,
so go figure ...

My advice - stick to using points if you want to have a good chance of flying in better style!

I'll just refer you back to the answer I gave when you asked this same question over on FT....:mrgreen:

BUT I'll add a question of my own here..... Do you REALLY think there is some "secret" method that gets one upgraded reliably for free?
