From news.com.au:

HOTELS on Mexico's Caribbean coast offer free holidays for three years to any tourist catching swine flu while on holiday there, in a bid to counter swine flu's blow to the industry.

The A(H1N1) outbreak in Mexico, from which 58 have died, has sparked mass cancelations of tourist bookings to one of the world's top tourist destinations.

Now there's a very strange incentive. Do you get to go back for free if you catch swine flu and die from it?

Weird promotion. Not much point in a free holiday if you are one of the one's to contract Swine Flu and then die from it....

How many deaths have there been so far from it though?

You take your chances anywhere; some greater than others. At least if you get sick here (and swine flu is low on the sickness scale), you'll get a pile of free holidays. As said, not so relevant for us so far away, but good if you lived closer to their typical tourist area.

I certainly don't want to trivialise swine flu in any way, but it's far from a fait accompli that you'll die from it, unless you're an infant, already unwell or perhaps elderly....which makes the Mexican hotel's offer quite valid...they're supremely confident that visitors to their area will be safe, and obviously desperate to save the jobs of the many thousands of locals who depend on tourism for their very livelihood.

If I was planning on a holiday to a "safe" area of Mexico, i'd still be going...well if I could get past the human barrier my Italian mother-in-law would create at the flight gate! :-)
