FNQ Advice?

Note that most properties in PD are low rise (2-3 stories), and even those that are directly across the road from 4 Mile beach (which is actually much shorter than its name) have their views somewhat obstructed by the trees that are planted all along the street.

Case in point top floor of Peninsula Boutique hotel, diretly across the road from beach but you cant really see water.

Per dairyfloss' post Coconut Groves top floor penthouses is one of the few that may see over the tree tops.

Many properties offer beach chairs you can walk down to the beach to enjoy the views. But i would concentrate more on comfort and proximity (walking distance to restaurants and Marina) over the views.

What ever you decide book early, I had some time and did a last minute visit to Cairns and Port Douglas this year and accommodation was very limited in choice. As noted already, views are somewhat limited as low rise and plenty of palm trees.

Would also recommend hiring a car and Port Douglas, a day trip to Cape Tribulation is easy in a regular car.

Sea views?
Hmmmm… Probably more sea ‘glimpses’ I guess 🫣 Take a look at photos on their website from the penthouses. Only a very short walk to the beach, in any event.

As mentioned above, there’s not really any proper sea views due to the trees that line 4 mile beach, and limited height of the buildings… but you might find a few which sneak a look through an opening.

The alternative if you really want that view, and still be near to PD is to find a beach house rental a little out of town, like at Oak Beach, about 5-10 mins or so south of PD. We had an amazing place there with 3+ bedrooms and an infinity edge pool looking over the beach and sea. I’ll see if I can find it online.

Cheers,
Matt.

@Cruiser Elite - here’s the place we stayed at Oak Beach, near PD, and properly on the sea! There’s any number of ways you can find and book the same property, but this was a simple direct link with good photos: Oceans Edge Beach House

Might inspire looking at some others like it.

As others mentioned, sea views are few in Port Douglas due to the rainforest which borders the beach the entire length of Four Mile Beach.

What time of year? If Wet Season/Summer you may want to be close to Macrossan street or definitely have a car to avoid walking in the humidity if you’re not a fan of being sweaty all the time. (Ah, realised you already said June 2024, so shouldn’t be an issue at all…)

That Coconut Grove is prime position along Macrossan street… close to the main Street. (Think Hastings St in Noosa). If you can find anything above Macrossan street eg Murphy Street or Island Point road, these will be elevated as they climb the point hill that makes up Port Douglas (dare I say knob). Coconut Grove starts to climb said hill, so some of its penthouse apartments may have better chance of view, though you’re back from the beach a bit.

Palm Cove has a buzz and vibe with lots of restaurants along the Esplanade and all easy walking (we holiday there overselves each year, and drop home if we happen to have forgotten to pack something…).

Trinity Beach is a bit quieter, fewer restaurants, but that Vue apartments is well positioned. I’d say more locals live in Trinity Beach cf. Palm Cove.

In town, Tamarind and C’est Bon are highly rated restaurants for locals and tourists alike, but I don’t know how they rate on the International Fanciness scale. As a local, I would consider them fancy.
