Flying the Dreamliner 'Vegemite'

Give it time. That will change.

Actually I hope not. Whilst as a technical person I appreciate the game changing technological advancements found in the 787, as a passenger I reckon it is one of the most over-hyped aircraft of all time. I've flown on it and on a few airlines now (TG, VN, BA) and just don't like the way it has been finished inside, reminds me far too much of the 737BSI. And I sure the hell won't be lining up to sit in one from Perth to London, far too long a time to be inside that thing. In fact my nomination for a name on the Australian Aviation facebook page was the DVTLiner, but thought they wanted a fleet name, not individual aircraft!

Conversely the A350 from a passenger perspective just feels a whole lot better. That said only flown the A350 on SQ, about a dozen times now, but in both business and economy it just feels a much better from this pax perspective.

Personally i'd be inclined to name the first 8 after the 8 states and territories. Seems too easy....

They could use great australian advertising campaigns. Economy passengers would have the opportunity to vote for one of the Yellow Pages classics to name a plane "Not happy Jan".

Anyone for using Aussie actors and their movies?

Jack Thompson – The Man from Snowy River
Nicole Kidman - Australia
Errol Flynn – Captain Blood
Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight,
Hugh Jackman – X Men - Wolverine
Geoffrey Rush – Shine,
Mel Gibson – Mad Max,
Chris Hemsworth – Thor –probably the most applicable….as that is what you will be after 17 hours in Y

Wow. That's great news.

Hmmm. I think it does. It could be an icon in Australia, but not an Australian icon in my opinion.

Meaning of icon in this context is "a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration."

Vegiemite is representative of Australia and also worthy of veneration in this country (and essentially no where else). So despite ownership is very much an Australian icon.

Actually these two are Americans who lived here during their childhood.

Mel, yes, a yank through and through.

Nicole Kidman, yes born in the US, but her parents were Australian's living in the US temporarily. So long bow there.

Arguably, calling her an "actor" is a long bow, too. I've planks on my back fence that were more convincing. YMMV, of course. ;)

To truly reflect the proposed Qantas seat pitch in economy, how about "The Uncomfortable Aussie" or maybe even shorter and less sign writing time could be spent naming it "DVT"?

I was thinking 'enhancement' would be the perfect name (apologies if repost)

edit: just submitted some actual names to see that after shortlisting finishes they're allowing voting. over to you, internet...

One could be called 'Social Engineering' and another 'Politically Correct.'

A third could be called 'The follower' in honour as to how many airlines have beaten QF to the punch in introducing B789s.

Honestly, what is news about this apart from the PER - LHR route that will tire many economy class fliers so much that the need to sleep it off may cancel any time savings from instead going via SIN, ICN, HND, BKK, MNL, NRT, KUL or a host of other Asian ports with competitors and enjoying a chance to stretch one's legs, or soaking up the wonderful atmosphere that many Asian cities offer in all their varying glory.

The names of indigenous peoples.
The facts that I can't name eight, and that they wouldn't win a popularity contest, are all the more reasons for adopting them.

Indigenous names
Kath Walker.
Faith Bandler.
Charles Perkins
Neville Bonner
Charlie Alley-light horseman WW1
Leonard Walters-Kittyhawk pilot WW2
Eddie Gilbert
Truganinni

OK the last I added because off the top of my head couldn't think of number 8 though some would have said Adam Goodes.
