Flying on/around anniversary date

I read a few old threads on this question (specifically this one which is closed: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ghts-on-membership-anniversary-date-7088.html ).

I have a similar question, would appreciate clarification.

My membership anniversary is 31st July. I've comfortably qualified for Platinum this membership year, so am good until 31 July 2016 (yay!) -- but my question:

- Are flights taken on the anniversary date in the old, or new membership year?

I land in LAX at ~7am on 31/7 (leaving 31/7 from Sydney) flying VA (irrelevant).
I need to get up to SJC the same morning for a day in the valley, then on Saturday 1/August I will be flying SJC-ORD.

Wanting to maximise my SC earn across both programs- I'm assuming if I flew AA on 31/7, it'd be a waste wrt SC earn - am I correct? (in which case I'll look to DL for Velocity earn)

In a similar vain, I'm assuming flights on the Saturday 1st August will definitely be in my new membership year - i.e. next year? (i.e. they'll go toward re-earning QF platinum next membership year?)

Sorry that's a really long way to ask probably a simple question, hopefully it's clear. Thanks in advance for your help!

To go to the basics: the flight is credited on the date it took off. If the plane is due to depart at 2359 hours on 31 July then it will credit in July regardless of when it lands. If it is due to depart at 0001 hours on 01 August then it will credit to August.

And I'm assuming an anniversary date of 31/July means that anything earned up to 2359 31 July will count toward my current year, and anything from 0001 1 August will count toward my next year?

In which case my flight Friday I should go for DL (as I've already got QF this membership year), and for Saturday 1st AA?

Sorry I think it's a basic question just want to make sure I understand

Correct - you must fly 01 August or later to credit to the new year.

The date of departure is based on your physical location, not Australia. So a departure 31 July in the USA, even if 01 August in Australia already, will credit to the previous year, not the new year.
