OK - so I am experimenting with Vibram FiveFingers - CLASSIC and have my first flight post getting some. Just wondering what people's thoughts are about travelling in them.

They are very lightweight and no need to remove at WTMD - I wouldn't need to remove them in flight thus more hygienic in bathrooms etc.

The downsides are that on this trip I can get away with only one pair of shoes so if I do wear them then i need to pack my work shoes in my hand luggage. Also I am flying in F...

Any thoughts?

Well my partner and I bought a pair for our upcoming French Polynesia. FP has coral everywhere so we bought them to double up as aqua shoes/sneakers as ours have decent grip. So with that, we are planning on wearing ours on the plane also.

Am just paranoid, prefer to wear shoes on board especially when taking off and landing.... do not want to expose my toes to anything that may crush them

Regular shoes won't protect much against a decent crushing force.

Vibram five fingers??? Is that something that gets delivered in a brown paper bag?

Surely you will be barked at to remove them anyway?

I haven't travelled in them Simon, but just a few thoughts to ponder:

1. Vibrams are designed to fit pretty firmly - do your feet swell during the flight?
2. Do you use flight compression socks and if so will they fit around the toes in the Vibrams?

If you do end up using them, I would love to hear about your experience.

I have been swayed against wearing them due to F segments. Feet don't swell though so have never worn compression socks.

I would make these comments:
1. Vibrams are designed to protect the feet from cuts etc while giving the benefits of bare foot running. Unless you plan to be jogging up and down the isles they offer no advantage above any other pair of shoes (although they clearly have an advantage over bare feet).
2. Don't expect the individual toes design to reduce foot swelling or the risk of DVT. They don't even remotely work like compression socks.
3. Wouldn't want anyone sitting near me with them on - especially in F - because of increased likelihood of smelly feet. The design reduces air circulation around the toes which, combined with no socks, is likely to make the feet more sweaty and therefore smelly.
4. Do you really want to look like a Yeti ?

Everytime someone mentions Five Fingers shoes it makes me laugh... One guy wore them on the Inca Trail hike, and he was a bit of a tool, which led to the best quote ever as a fellow group member tried to explain them to the locals and others on the hike.

"Five Fingers? Yeah, they are like shoes.... but for wankers."

(PS I have met simongr and he wasn't a wanker... but the quote is still funny!)

Personally I use the newer kind of Adidas etc sneakers which are just mesh at the top and minimal body all around (although they look normal). Comfortable, protective and allow ideal air circulation.

this kind of thing
