Hi, does anyone know if Flybuys points are earned on Tobacco and gift card purchases? I looked through the T&Cs on the Flybuys website & couldn't see these listed as excluded purchases.

Oops, just checked more thoroughly, Tobacco and Gift cards Don't earn Flybuys points, yet Alcohol Does. WTF?

I believe the Tobacco product ban on points relates to government regulations. There are government restrictions on advertising of Tobacco products and other promotions on these products. Offering loyalty points or other rewards on these products could be seen as an incentive to buy the products which is against the spirit of these restrictions.

I don't think there are similar government restrictions on the advertising and promotion of alcohol, except when it comes to promotion of alcohol to under 18s.

Fair call, why not gift cards? Coles/Flybuys partners not making any money? I'm spewing as I recently bought $150 worth of Bunnings ppc & didn't use my velocity gw (no cc) so earning zilch on a decent spend

Low profit margin, ability to manufacture spend/create circular spend if points are also earned when paying with gift cards...

With the current 3 x points on gift cards promo, how often does this type of promo happen? Should I buy up big or just a little because another offer is just another month away? Any advice appreciated.

I think it's been at least a year since they've had a similar promotion.

Don't buy up too big. It will increase the minimum spends for your targeted offers if you spend too much above your weekly spending rate. You'll end up losing bonus points if you do this. You're better off finding a place which sells discounted Coles giftcards. This offer is only a return of 1.5%.

I think this might be a targeted offer. My current offer is 10× points on Holiday packages, as I've been searching flights to VLI.

I received a buy a eftpos gift card and earn 2000 flybuys offer this week I took this one up as i was going to spend $50 in the bottle shop anyway, there is a $5.95 activation fee, so it was 2000 FB for $5.95 :)

This same offer was in the weekly catalogue. So there's no need to activate it to receive the bonus points.

Yes-odd that 1 of our 3 accounts got an activation email when none needed at all. Was hoping that the email might have been offering unlimited repeats but no such luck

Would have been nice :)

BTW: I've already had my 2,000 flybuys credited to my account.

In Coles today I went to buy a gc, but then remembered I'd rec'd an email to 'activate' the 2K bonus points, which I had not done. Is it necessary to activate? In the past, I have just bought them and got the points OK.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Can confirm that Bunnings gift cards earn FB pts and the spend counted for Status Credits.
Note: They do not activate a weekly spend offer though (although as per other posts, they probably increase the weekly spend offer amount next time around.

With the 2000+ GC targeted offer, the T&C's in the email state you can only claim bonus points Once per Flybuys per household. Same T&C's listed in the catalogue. So best off paying $35.95 for one card.

Not necessarily-the ability to earn Amex points (and supermarket bonuses) means it often make sense to buy the maximum denomination

Ah, that's what makes the game interesting!

For me, for both my work lunch & weekly shops, Coles is the most convenient & I'm using GW DC as I don't qualify for a CC, so I don't want to push up the value of my minimum spend too much. NTM GW's $2-1pt doesn't inspire me enough to go above a minimum spend.
