Fly Well. New QF Covid procedures

Wow this got off topic quickly 😂

So when are we going to be able to really all put these policies to the test and travel freely!?

1 June according to Gladys.

Just looking at the interplay of the current rules, and if you are Queenslander 150k or less from NSW border - that should be most of Brisbane - you can travel there and cross, then go anywhere you fancy in NSW on holidays. And on return it seems avail yourself of a Queensland resident exemption from Quarantine.

Doubt that one would work on a flight out of OOL however.

Yes, it is odd that QF/JQ aren’t really adding flights until 01 Jul. Virgin is 15 Jun. You would think at least SYD-MEL would start up sooner.

Yes Queenslanders are free to cross into dirty dirty NSW and return as much as they like and they are doing so every day. If the whole political gamesmanship that’s going on weren’t so serious you would have to laugh. Given OOL is technically Federal property they could theoretically set up a fenced walkway from the terminal exit into NSW!

I find it difficult to believe that wearing face masks would be such a huge disincentive to fly as to have serious economic repercussions.
It's a very mild inconvenience. Masks are commonplace in m any Asian countries. Australia seems to have a cultural aversion to them.
All cultural biases can be overcome.

If the airlines want it to be more widely accepted then they need offer proper N95 masks, not the the rubbish they will be offering. We all know they won't pay the $$ for them though.

Also just pointing out that whilst masks are commonplace in Asia, remember this virus originated there and spread very quickly there, seems it didn't work well in my uneducated view..

Again for clarity, I am not against any proper measure and I do take this virus seriously, I just think if they are going to put measures in place do it properly and not just token measures and cheap flimsy masks.

Probable transmission occurring on an aircraft. Probable aircraft transmission of Covid-19 in-flight from the Central African Republic to France

Virus transmission mitigation.
https://www.cmaj.ca/content/cmaj/192/15/E410.full.pdf reporting “In our investigation, transmission may have been mitigated by mild symptoms and masking during the flight.”

I wear a mask to protect you as I may be a asymptomatic spreader.

If states (QLD, SA, WA, NT, TAS) are fearful of an infected passenger arriving, they will be more fearful of the possibility of additional passengers being infected during the flight and passing it on within the state they have arrived into. Reduce the risk of cross border infection and hopefully get borders open sooner.

Mitigate risk, borders open, more flights hopefully the sooner we can get tourism and business's resuming.

Should face masks be mandatory on aircraft to mitigate virus transmission, with impractical social distancing?

It's a bit strange how Australia has been so slow to embrace mask wearing amongst the public. This is turning out to be considered very important given the number of asymptomatic carriers. The supply chains are worked out now and many types of masks are available. Some are better than others, but all are way better than nothing. (Don't left perfect be the enemy of good.) I definitely support it being required for domestic flights.

Says what health authority in AU? Singapore is a nation of mask wearers has done donut for them.

Don't get me wrong, I will be wearing one on a plane if it gets me out of QLD for a bit :)

Correction: we all know that PASSENGERS won't pay for them. N95 Mask surcharge anyone?

Not sure why it needs to be an AU authority. Australia isn't exactly a bastion of research on COVID-19 for a few reasons: 1) we have limited research prowess to start with and much funding for research has been cut in the past few years, and 2) we don't have much COVID-19 to research (which of course is great but means we're not going to be the source of info on this).

Here's an article from just yesterday which mentions face masks reduce the risk of transmission by 50%: Face Masks at Home Reduce COVID-19 Risk, Study Says

The study is talking about "at home" but you could extrapolate that to mean any closed area where people are together.

Sorry but that was a study of households that had a Covid positive present. So the reduction in risk was almost certainly from the infected person wearing a mask rather than the non infected persons mask preventing the infection.
The wearing of masks in Asia is common as mostly they are used to wearing masks when ill.In a pandemic there will be asymptomatic carriers so everyone should wear a mask as they can't really know if they are infectious or not.

Welcome to AFF, I-wonder. You've dug up some interesting stuff there

Cheers skip
Thank you for the welcome skip.

I have sat on the sidelines for a long time benefiting from everyones wisdom, knowledge and guidance. Happy to throw in my 2 cents now, especially as the cabin is my workplace (vested interest) and I want all to be informed as much as possible and safe. Collecting Job Keeper, I am hopefully giving all some benefit of our taxes via many Goole search's and forum read's in digging up interesting stuff.

I do not think many would identify cabin crew as a risk to passengers, yet if I am asymptomatic and not wearing a mask, talking across seated passengers the risk is there. With knowledge that a domestic crew member, was previously hospitalised re Covid-19, (believed to be infected from their long haul partner) and had worked domestically, risk needs to be acknowledged and mitigated.

If Covid-19 can find its way to isolated Blackwater in Queensland and find the vulnerable resulting in a 30 year olds death, I will certainly be wearing a mask to mitigate the risk of someone taking home, unbeknown to them Covid-19 and risking their self or their loved ones health.

Looking forward to when I can refocus my efforts on putting the wisdom shared by others into maximising my FF points for seat redemptions, remember freight may go before me on staff travel :)

Stay Safe.

I do hold fears for the future of CX now that Hong Kong has really become part of China.

If China mobilises it's troops in the city to squash protests, then there will be zero future bookings from me, paid or redemption, even for transit.

So if masks offer no protection from catching the virus, why do all the healthcare workers in Covid wards in hospitals wear masks at all?

We change them frequently not leave them on all the time. And often we wear them to protect immune compromised patients.
In Covid wards the masks are better quality and fitted properly.Plus in Covid wards will have extra face protection not just masks

I will defer to the doctors here, but masks are traditionally worn by the health fraternity to prevent them from infecting the patient, not the other way round. think gowned and masked surgeons in an operating theatre.

In a pandemic environment, if there is supply available, if masks are worn by "everyone", then it will help stop the spread of the infection from those walking about with or without symptoms AND give people confidence that they can get out & about. Hence why i think mask wearing should be if not mandatory then strongly encouraged on aircraft, for the time being, where social distancing isn't practicable.

These groups seem to think the mask is to protect the wearer from infectious droplets
