Hi all,
Can anyone tell me the cheapest way to fly (in any order of locations) from:
1. Sydney Australia to East Coast of USA (preferably New York) to Thailand (preferably Bangkok), and then back to Sydney Australia?
I have been told that I would have to purchase an around the world ticket. Is this true? Or can I hop skip and jump from one place to the next? Maybe fly into Bangkok, then New York and then back to Sydney Australia. I don't know????:(

I don't think a round the world ticket would be needed. Perhaps something like the oneworld circle pacific fare would do. The Round the world may be cheaper though!

oneworld - Circle Pacific

That fare there is fairly good value if you're not in it for points earning.

You could route SYD-LAX-JFK then JFK-FRA-BKK then BKK-SYD. Flights would be on United, Lufthansa and Thai so the longer ones will be in pretty poor economy classes - cheap though.

Qantas had a similar fare, I've booked SYD-SIN-LHR-JFK-LAX-SYD and it was just on $2500, however its no longer available.

Another option maybe routing via Asia to New York and doing stopover (realising that this may add about 8 or 9 hours to total travel time in one direction). Best example I can think of is Emirates SYD-Dubai-New York/New York-Dubai-Bangkok/Bangkok-Sydney. Or just buying a fare to Bangkok and getting a separate fare from their to New York.

SQ may be a competitive option SYD-JFK with a stopover in SIN (buy a cheap fare from there up to Thailand). However I would have thought JQ to Thailand and purchase a ticket to JFK from there would have been hard to beat if dollars was the focus.

What about SYD - JFK return ticket on Thai Airlines. It would have to route through BKK and you could make one of the routings (either to US or on return) into a stopover.

I've used such a strategy before when wanting to go to two countries only. Route to one of the countries using the national airline of the other country. This would mostly require having to go through the second country as it would be the main hub.

Only problem is Thai don't service NY.

Actually I think you'll find on the LH fare that you can't fly into NYC from AU, only LAX/SFO.
I believe you can open jaw and fly out of NYC to FRA, but last time I ticketed it, def. only LAX/SFO as entry points on this fare.

Do you belong to any loyalty programs such as QFF.If so the answers will be different.
For Oneworld which is the QF alliance a RTW fare would be cheaper than a Circle Pacific fare so that may be why it was reccomended.Of course for most of us here being forced to fly extra miles to save money is like finding the proverbial pot of gold.:D

I have done this trip a couple of years ago, though not going to JFK i went to Dallas. After researching every option I found a Round the World ticket the cheapest option. I thought Lufthansa was the best leg of the trip, Thai just so so and United pretty ordinary, and Air NZ last leg very nice. I joined the Star Alliance before going and had enough points to get return flight LA to New York last year.

TG, know you are an experienced TA, but am impressed, and I think it is pertinent that you use city code NYC! A good pickup, as so often the airport code JFK is used for New York (as it is in this thread), which if you type into some (online) booking engines won't always pick up fares to other NY airports (ie EWR & LGA).

Another way to do it....

Prices return to both LAX/JFK AND BKK can be had very cheap if done seperately.

My sister actually just did this:

SYD-HKT on Jetstar $580 return (sale)
SYD-JFK on United $1100 return (sale)
$1680 all up.

Of course both these options require a sale period AND returning back to SYD but just another option if saving $$$ is the only factor and you can find these sale prices.
