Fly around Australia under 24 hours

lisabella, don't think for a second we (or at least I) are telling you not to do this. We're simply making suggestions which will take some of the risk out of it (and a good suggestion was the JQ DRW - BNE leg by DocJames) \ make it a higher chance your successful in this around OZ trip, and ensure that if something goes wrong your not stuck on the wrong side of the country with no way of getting home...

I for one hope your successful in this, and don't forget to post up a trip report. :)

Bill,

I'm a bit confused as to which side of the fence you are on! :)
I would not do it as set up but just thought I'd put forward Bundy Bear's thoughts from FT for consideration.

I believe that the exercise is self defeating if you have to skip relevant places to make the 24 hrs work. I would possibly look at the 48 hr itinerary/option though.

This reminds me of another "white whale" - trying to pass through (and stop) at every 'suburban' CityRail (Sydney area) station in 24 hours. About 15 years ago some guy wrote a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald claiming to have done it. In recent years I've seen discussion of it on railway forums (yet there are such things!) but it usually develops into an argument about what constitutes the Sydney suburban system! A bit like this. Of course you are even more at the mercy of late connections if you try this. What would be worse 24 hours on 737s or 24 hours on CityRail trains?;) To this day I've never heard anyone come back and say they've done it.

I reckon just do it. Along the lines you have suggested with some modifications to make it all one carrier. Then report back. Whatever happens it will be a great story! Set the benchmark...

Well the OP did say 'Around Australia' so presumably that means 'around the edge' therefore Canberra could be considered an acceptable loss.

With the CityRail idea, simply stolen from the Tube. Note they never give away their exact route, because that would leave them open to people slightly modifying their route and improving on their time.

The suburban metro has I believe 306 stations.

lisabella,

When making your decision think of Bundy Bear's sign off on FT.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
I was half expecting to be quoted in the this but not for the reason that was quoted.

I did a round Australia flight back in 2007. 2007 Round Australia: Why Fly Non Stop When You Can Connect which included: Newcastle; Canberra; Adelaide; Broome; Kununurra; Gove; Cairns and for good measure Mt Isa, it took more than 24 hours though.

It would be fun to do the 24 hour thing but not just at the moment.

Hi all,

I applaud the idea. Furthermore I would like to see a "Leader Board" set up for recording such feats of skill.

We could have "Race around Australia" or "Most stopovers in 24 hrs".

Personally I am sick of flying when I do SYD-PER-MEL-PER-SYD in one week so I don't think I will be qualifying.

Doing the lap of Australia in under 24 hours still remains the target! Rule is one stop per state/territory.

Been trying to incorporate BNE-SYD-HBT-MEL-ADL, but scheduling does not allow sufficient time to travel to Hobart & still get back to MEL then on to ADL in time to catch an early afternoon flight to PER.

Also tried looking at early Nov/Dec (after introduction of daylight saving) but scheduling doesn't change much, it's just the variances in time zones and QLD & WA not having daylight saving that does my head in! Seems a Mon or Fri is the best day of the week to attempt this.

Fall back position is to travel QF on all legs from BNE to DRW, then also book a cheap JQ fare DRW-BNE on a later flight as a back-up in case I miss the DJ 1.35AM flight. A few hours in Darwin airport will be nothing compared with spending some 20 continuous hours in Y class 767/737 flights!

You could consider doing QF787 SYD-CBR 08:15-09:10
and QF763 CBR-MEL 10:15-11:20 but any delay on either of those could put the rest of the plan in jeopardy although I guess the same could be said for any other of the flights planned.

Of course, you're all presuming it has to be done from BNE.

You could try and start elsewhere, and buy return to/from BNE. You'd have done around Oz in <24hrs, and just added return to/from BNE at each end. It may prove shorter/easier from other ports (thinking MEL because no curfew or PER because of the redeye flight).

eg. Start in PER @ 2200 and get redeye to MEL, then connect to c6am SYD, then BNE, then DRW (or CNS/DRW) and then down to PER again (or via BME don to PER).

Havent got time to look at timetables now but might be possible to do the lap "faster" starting elsewhere.

As a start, but you'll need to look some more to cut the time a little.

QF 1006 PER-DRW 1910-0005
JQ673 DRW-BNE 0145-0605
QF 505 BNE-SYD 0700 - 0835
QF 81 SYD-ADL 0930-1115 (note: connection time might be an issue)
QF 686 1140 - 1325 ADL-MEL
QF777 1505 - 1720 MEL-PER

Hows this for 24 hours travelling.
(No flight numbers but all on QF and JQ)
HBA-MEL 06:05-07:20
MEL-ADL 08:10-09:00
ADL-SYD 09:30-11:50
SYD-BNE 12:15-13:40
BNE-PER 14:55-18:35
PER-DRW 19:10-00:05
DRW-BNE 01:45-06:05
There's almost no margin for any delay on this plan but if it could be done it would be an achievement.

All I can say is 'do it'!

And write up a trip report.

Is there a reason for this 24 odessy - or do you have more money than sense ?

The DOM-INT-DOM in SYD-ADL will be a killer. Also no time for Flounging!
