Has anyone had success using Fly Ahead where you had used a complimentary platinum upgrade to business on the original flight? The terms and conditions on fly ahead refers to a seat being available in the original cabin booked, but I'm wondering if they let you keep your business seat if one is avail on an earlier flight.

thx

I've done fly ahead on plat upgrade couple times, and in one case moved to later flight so i could fly with a colleague who was running late. If you're on flexi fare i find they're very accommodating - providing J cabin has space. Don't expect meal service if you do fly ahead though, but you normally still get full service.

Thanks that makes sense

My husband did last year on a MEL>SYD Saturday late afternoon flight. Approached check in and asked, expecting to be knocked back but it was changed and he was home sooner. He also got full meal service.

I have done so, but this was before the changes announced late last year.

Awards are eligible for fly ahead and if an upgrade (to Z) is treated as an award then it could be possible.

Funny you ask – I had thought I was on to a bit of a work-around for this actually.

Originally booked on a Getaway (or whatever the lowest fare class is now) and had done a points upgrade to J.

Lounge agent said "Let me take a look and see if your fare class is eligible... oh wait, you're in business, here you".

I feel like it was a mistake and that she just didn't check because I was already in J, but worked successfully! Flew ahead a couple of hours and was very happy with that result.

I've done it (as a Gold and with a points upgrade) at SYD recently for a domestic flight. The CSA has a 4 step process to do:

1. Cancel "upgrade" so your original fare basis is showing
2. Move you to earlier flight (assessing whether any cost differential). Let's assume answer = No.
3. Re-install the upgrade to Business on your new flight (if available)
4. Make seat allocation.

I generally find the lounge staff to be very accommodating and able/willing to do a lot more than call centre staff.

In the old flexi days I'd never had an issue turning up late or early and being placed on another flight free of charge, but the couple of times I'd rung the call centre to make arrangements prior to arriving at the airport I was charged the fare difference.

I've done it but told catering not assured but they'd sort something out for me. Onboard the CSM told me I'd be getting no food - not even a free sandwich off the trolley. It was only ADL-MEL so I didn't care too much, but it was a timely reminder that some CSM's simply don't care.

Minimum should get Y catering originally allocated to your booking.

DJ shows through from time to time.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have always got something from the cart if i asked even if they had J meals. I would really send feed back if I was told nothing for you in J, they can always do something, staff like that should be reported.
