I got my information from The Man in Seat Sixty-One - the train travel guide... which gave me all I needed to book the different legs. The train from Milan to Tirano and vv does not need booking, Just turn up. Check the times, though, so you don't miss the Bernina train.

I took the Tirano-St Moritz & return last Easter. The snow was still around and rather pretty.

On the Tirano - Chur train try to get a seat in a carriage that has the "large" slide down window openings. These may be the slightly older carriages, though still quite comfortable. The carriages have interior lights - even during the day - which can give a reflection in the window glass & spoil your photos. Try to get near the front or rear of the train as the tight curves can give a great photo of the train in the picture. I spent most of the run with my camera lens poking out the window. Some amazing photos.

Heading back to Italy for round 2 in the middle of August. Still lots to tick off the list, but back to Firenze for the markets for sure.

BTW
Marvellous TR JessicaTam.

The Man in Seat 61 is an absolute gold mine for pointers.

We did Tirano-St Moritz-Chur last August. Between Tirano and St Moritz we managed to time the trip to join a service that had an open air carriage hooked on to the rear of the train .... simply spectacular. We didn't book (don't think you can book regular trains). No carriage walls and windows to interrupt the view we were very lucky with the weather, not sure if they still run in September, but if so well worth trying to get on one of these.

Some advice we read before planning the journey was to avoid the Bernina Express service, and instead just take a local service, as although the express service has panoramic windows they can't be opened and the glass can cause reflections in photos and secondly they tend to be more fully booked (full of tourists on package trips) whereas local services are not and therefore it is easy to move from one side of the train to the other as the scenery changes, and pull down the windows for photos. Of course the advice all indicates the open air carriage to be the best - although less comfortable (cattle truck is the best description with wooden benches) and you may require a jumper for the higher parts of the journey.

Did you have the degustation ex-DXB?
Looking forward to the menus!
Oh yeah, I forgot about them. I am back at my usual work location next week, so will scan the menus to pdf. I didn't have the degustation as my dietary requirements preclude it.

This train requires a seat reservation. If it is not busy you can move about and choose a different seat. The small alcoves at the end of each carriage have a window that can be opened to make photos easier.
