I have a flight from Brisbane to Miami, with 2 stops. Sydney, and Dallas.

My Brisbane departure to Sydney says I need to be at the airport 30 minutes before at the Domestic terminal. Does that mean I can only do my international check-in in Sydney? Or will they be able to check me through to Miami in Brisbane, but I just do passport control in Sydney?

No and then yes.

But I’d be there well before the 30min cutoff as BNE will want to see that you have everything in order for the international journey before they will check you all the way through.

Ah. Thanks. My question did have two questions. So I think I get ya. :) But to confirm - I’ll do my checkin at Brisbane. And they will check all my stuff. (Passports, visa status etc) and I’ll get my boarding passes all the way to Miami - at Brisbane.

Then head down to Sydney - and find my way from domestic arrivals - to international departures. As if I checked in in Sydney? Bags I hope, will just make their own way. Don’t need to collect them at Sydney - and then check them again?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They’ll print you a bag tag that will have Miami as the final destination. You won’t have to collect it in Sydney, but you will of course have to collect it at DFW, go through customs and then redeposit the bag to go through to MiA.

Transfer information:

As an aside apparently (disappointingly) the airside transfer wont be coming back, QF has given up the lease of the domestic re-check in area over at T1.

In my experience the check in staff there waere always great at offering earlier / later flights depending on when you arrived. Now you'll have to lug luggage yourself on a bus that takes forever, re-check in at T3 and hope you dont need any assistance for a flight change.

Note that domestic check in time for an international connection is 45 minutes.
Irrespective, I'd be checking in 2 hours before your Brisbane flight is scheduled to depart.

Unless it's stopped in the past week the transfer bus from DOM-INTL is still provided if there is a QF flight departing from Intl.
From intl-dom, I have no idea.

@CrowsFeet try the transfer desk at Gate 15 first (refer map on the QF website in the above link) upon arriving in SYD from BNE...

Right, no int -> dom, but dom -> int operates part of the day (not all day). Otherwise T bus (free) or train ($$$).

If the transfer isn’t running, the train is $4.99 for 2 mins ride according to my Opal app. Any CC / Debit card will get you onboard.

Are you just going off the website? Or do you have other information?

Because the bus is definitely on in the other direction which the website doesn’t mention. Seems odd they would run it in one direction only.

No its what i heard, They have a transfer bus which runs in both direction, but apparently its no longer airside. The previous domestic check in area over at T1 is no longer in use, there is now a staff member who check your boarding pass at the landside kerbside and you get on the bus.

Well the bus leaves airside from T3 - and as far as I know the route is airside - it always dropped you off landside on T1. I'd still class this, or the reverse, an airside bus - a landside bus to me uses public roads and doesn't drive on the airfield at all.

The route is the important thing so you don't have to drive in traffic - if you clear security in arrival in T3 instead of on departing T1 it won't make much difference. Either way the bus never saved you from the security screening.

I doubt you'd have to take your own bags, even Brisbane which doesn't have a dedicated bus still has a bag drop in the international terminal. Hard to tell what a temporary measure is vs permanent whilst traffic is still far from normal.

It would be absolutely pointless for QF to run their own (actual) landside bus when the airport already runs the T bus, it would just be a duplicate of that.

Indeed, i heard anecdotally so don't quite understand either RE the bus situation, hopefully someone on here will do it soon.

I personally think the loss of the domestic check in at T1 is a shame as it was always very quick, particularly in the early morning when lines could be substantial at T3, but more so for the manned check in agents who were always great, i was nearly always offered earlier flights etc if transferring from intl.

I connected at SYD on Friday (18 March 2022). No QF bus from int -> dom. At dom the international transfer gate has a sign with hours that it operates, from memory early (7ish) to mid morning and then mid afternoon (4pm?) to evening (9pm?). Sorry I didn't take a picture or notes of the actual times.

So just confirming, I arrive BNE to SYD at 13.45 at Domestic Terminal. I would have checked in for my full flight to Miami when leaving Brisbane. Bags and all. So I get off my domestic place and find my way to Terminal 1. And this is the bus thing people are talking about. I have (if all goes well) 1hr 55min to my departure.

So either there's a bus, or I need to walk to Terminal 1 - at which point, I will do the usual passport control stuff (At Terminal 1). I'll only have my hand luggage, as my bags have been checked all the way to Miami (?). Or do I need to get them at Dallas (Flight is BNE->SYD->DFW->MIA)?

I would arrive in Dallas, and go through customs there? And then collect the bag, maybe? And then find a way to get my back onto my DFW->MIA flight. Which is treated now as dometic.

Does that seem right? The talk above about the bus is for Sydney? Which may or may not be a problem?

Yes, you will need to make your way between the domestic arrival terminal and T1. Either QF bus, if it's operating, the T-Bus, the train, or a taxi. Do not entertain trying to walk it.

At T1, you will go through border control and security.

On arrival in DFW, you will go through border control. Then you will collect your checked bags, and go through Customs, making any declarations of goods with you, if appropriate. You will then walk through, and there'll be an AA bag drop area, where your luggage tags will be checked.

You then check the AA departures boards in that area to check what terminal and gate your flight is (currently) leaving from. DFW has at least four terminals - A, B, C, D. When you know your terminal, go upstairs (or downstairs?) to go through security. Expect to take your shoes, belt, etc off, and to have liquid restrictions enforced. After security, follow the signs to the inter-terminal air/sky train. Get off at your departure terminal - there are two stops per terminal, depending on the gate number. Go down the escalators, find your gate, check your flight is still leaving from there.
Have a sigh of relief, then go to Starbucks, Auntie Anne's, and the newsagent to load up on necessities. Well, that's what I do at DFW before hitting the AA lounge. :p
