Hi all,
I'm new on here and excited to be here!
Looking at going to LA from Melbourne in late august/early sept. The flight prices seem astronomical for that time of year on all the big trans-pacific carriers at the moment. $1600 just to LA on VA, QF and EVEN UNITED!!!! I havent seen prices this high for an off-season time for as long as i can remember (they usually sit below, or even well below $1400). Does anyone have any intel as to why it's so high for that period and what are people's opinions on how low it will drop to if a sale does hit soon (i'm hoping there will be a sale)?
thank you all!

If I were you I would wait for a sale. I have seen prices below the $1200 and even on occasion under $1000 to the USA in recent months.

Have you checked prices on Air NZ. You'd have to fly via Auckland but I believe they are having a sale.

Thanks Mattg. Yeh Airnz are the only cheap ones at the moment - but I am hopeful of getting QF for cheap - wanting a good dose of status points to push for silver.

Qantas fares to the USA were on sale for more than a month not too long ago for about $1200 return. I suspect you may be too late now for travel in a few months' time. But you never know.

If I were trying to maximise SCs without spending a fortune to fly QF... I would look at Air New Zealand (for a much lower price), then take a few AA F flights while in the USA. ;)

Besides MEL/LAX/MEL are you planning on any cities within the USA?

Have you got any QF freq flyer points to spend?

How many QF status credits have you got & what date is your anniversary year. Have you completed your 4 eligible QF or JQ squiggle (~) flights yet?

Hi Oz,
I am thinking about going to NYC as well, but the flight dates aren't really working in my favour. I can't get the cheapest price on Qantas for the dates i want, doing a stopover in LA and then carrying on to NY. Also looked at Chicago and Miami as other options but they were all more expensive.
I have not very many QF FFs to spend.
It's good to see that the Qantas prices have gone down... waiting to see if VA will match them too. Also secretly hoping that the lower AUD will also drive the price down a bit as demand drops.

Might be a good idea to call QF & tell them what dates you"re after as it's far easier to check availability for a specific fare bucket & fare quote an itinerary via a GDS than it is on an airline or OTA website.

It could save you hundreds of dollars.

great advice oz! I really hope that something comes up better. :)

can get $1030 on VA website (DL metal),via SYD
Using promo code mpv23

Better late than never... thanks SO much to everyone for all of your help on this. In the end i was able to snare a Qantas fare MEL-LAX/JFK-MEL for $1400... QF93/94 on the A380 both ways between MEL and LAX so very happy with that. Will earn me some good points and status credits too.

I am looking for a JFK-SYD in PE for Feb, seems crazy right now for an R/T. I'm hoping a sale comes up soon.
