Hi all,

I am looking into the detail of a USA trip early May 2015, would like to take advantages of the cheaper airfares and so far it all looks promising. My preference is to Fly Sydney - New York, New York - San Francisco, San Francisco - Sydney. Due to an additional 2 legs each way within Australia, I really want to keep all flights to one carrier if possible. I haven't been able to find suitable options so far, United meets the International legs but not locally. It seams flying out of SFO is my problem.

Any obvious options that I have missed here?

Alternatively, how do United stack up for reliability with regard to flights and flight times?

Cheers

United is the only airline that flies direct from Australia to SFO. If you're willing to add an extra flight between SFO-SYD, then one can go via LAX or other options such as YVR or HNL. Another option would be to fly with Air NZ SFO-AKL-SYD.

United was pretty poor in the past when it ran the (ancient) 747s on its Australian routes. Things have probably improved now that they've switched over to the 772s, but I haven't flown them so I couldn't really answer.

Don't know where you are located in OZ but via HKG on CX is excellent, they fly to SFO & NYC and many other USA and Canadian destinations. Ok it makes the trip longer but hey you get to visit the fabulous Hong Kong too.

Thanks, so far they are the only option for a Return flight to New york with stop over option in San Fran

West coast and north, I hadn't considered that path because of the longer trip, will look at that option Thanks.

Another option for another nice city is JAL via Tokyo. Coming from AUS you'd land at NRT, but the SFO flight leaves HND so you could spend a couple of days in the city as well!

Not that its that much of a pain getting to/from NRT given the amazing japanese public transport anyway.

Might also be slightly less flying time than via HKG.
