Flight delayed, lose access to boarding pass in app

Or you could use your printer to print off the boarding pass if you check-in using the website.

Its a fascinating piece of security theater though, that staff at the aircraft door have been trained to deny entry to someone already in the aerobridge who has shown a boarding pass. Apparently criminals can now teleport themselves into the aerobridge without going through the gate at the start of the aerobridge...

Maybe whomever trained them in this could roll out some Priority Boarding training to Qantas staff? 😀

Maybe too hard for QF IT to design a timer in the app to keep boarding passes valid 30-45 minutes past planned departure time to allow things like this to not cause further delays?

Given recent QF OTP they'd need a parameter which allows adjustment of those 30-45mins to 180-240mins !!!

Poor UX - agreed. The app should have been smart enough to issue/re-issue a BP with updated flight timings.

Ha, ha - good one. :p Its Qantas.

They should fix problems like this before removing the ability to print your own tickets easily at the machines, not the other way around.

You may be optimistic that the problem with the app will be fixed at ANY time.

Given the effort Qantas has/is making to get us into digital stuff, and do away with paper (and humans), its just a joke that the app needs 'work arounds'. If the damn boarding bar code shows on the app to be scanned, just get it to update when the flight is delayed. Is that so hard, technically?

is one reason why I ALWAYS get a hardcopy BP at the lounge (another is that I don't want to be the numpty who holds up the line trying to get the barcode on the phone to scan properly). At HBA we still have check-in counters too :)

I’m no Qantas apologist but there are times when pax walk to the aircraft across the tarmac. It wouldn’t be unheard of for someone to walk to the wrong aircraft.

I've had this happen regularly where the boarding pass has disappeared in the Qantas app before boarding has commenced. It can also be a bit funny with connecting flights and it only giving you the option to display the boarding pass you don't actually need. In this situation, I'd just load up my frequent flyer card and scan that instead to get a printed boarding receipt.

I've never had it happen where it has disappeared whilst I've been on the aerobridge however - probably lucky as there's plenty of circumstances where I haven't had a backup such as a paper boarding pass or use the Wallet app (I usually do save to Wallet but but sometimes forget), so would have had nothing to show the crew whilst boarding the aircraft in this scenario.

A good one to watch out for.

There was a situation a few years ago in France (Orly IIRC) where the BA lounge is landside.

Punter flying back to UK used their app to gain entry to the lounge, the flight was delayed enough that when boarding was called it was after flight time and the boarding pass would not come up on the app. Security would not let them through for their flight without a BP to scan. It was the last flight of the day, so the lounge and check-in were all closed.

They missed their flight.

I always get a hard copy boarding pass.

I always screenshot my mobile BP for the reason the OP mentions. I may also need it for lounge entry on arrival or points claim if they don't automatically post.

This has been happening for ages. Always take a screenshot. Poor IT.
One of many reasons I hate Android OS. Apple wallet has had the ability store BPs and all sorts of stuff for years.

That wasn’t intended to be an iOS v Android pissing competition but they really do need to do more.

Rubbish design. I know UA keeps the BP available (and even has an option for it to show on the home/lock screen iirc) until after the flight has landed. I'm sure other apps are better at this too. This shouldn't be a user problem to solve with wallets and screenshots.

of course paper BP's make this not an issue. Oh wait, kiosks being replaced....

:D

Is this a security requirement? (showing boarding pass to cabin crew), in many other places its not required.

It seems to be Australia only as far as I can tell.

Certainly while flying around the UK and Europe, cabin crew look at you very oddly if you present your boarding pass to them. They either think you're an idiot who's asking for extra help to find their seat, or as a frequent flyer they think you're showing it to them so they can see your status, as a bit of a 'do you know who I am' moment.

It's actually a QF thing. I have JQ and JL boarding passes in my Google Wallet. QF just hasn't been 'Match Fit'(TM) enough to implement it in their app.

I have had the BP disappear a number of times because of delays. Couple of times, the crew at the aircraft entry have done this tiny wiggle of my phone screen to check the BP is in the app instead of a static screen capture. As a backup, I always carry my QFF card and have needed it a couple of times.

Not really. You have done everything you can within what the QF app offers. If the service is delayed, this is captured in the My Trips page and also on the homepage. Ideally, the BP will also be updated with the *updated* departure & boarding times.

If for any reason this doesn't happen, to my knowledge, the few ways to board is

1. To ask for a printed BP, or
2. Scan your FF card at the gate to print a boarding receipt or
3. Use the BP loaded into your phone's wallet (depending on what phone you have, this might vary)
this is another reason to add to my growing list of reasons to prefer a paper boarding pass! And I am no luddite, just paper ALWAYS works.

Wow, never seen them do this. Are you sure they were checking it, or were they just trying to locate the details on the screen and instinctively touched it? I can't really imagine why they would have a problem with screenshots of BPs

I mean, a very very outlier, conservative, don't-trust-anything/anyone thinking - may be someone had a chance took a screenshot, altered the source & destination, flight number, seat number, pax name etc ... Not hinting that someone can do it ... but it's not difficult I'd say, given the technology today ...

What I just said may not even make sense ... It's just that I come from QA background and I doubt pretty much "everything" :D
