Flight cancelled - and all because of a wine stain

Hi all

Currently sitting in the CBR J lounge, having been booted off QF1285, CBR-MEL (scheduled for 18:45).

The reason we were given was that CBR had very recently become fogged in. And it is a bit foggy just now, granted.

BUT - the real cause was bringing in an engineer to replace a seat cushion in 17D following a wine spill. That created the initial 30 minute delay, during which time the skies were clear (and we'd already be in MEL by now).

We didn't hear the announcement about the
wine and the seat. But the passenger next to us did, and told staff she'd be happy to change to 17D, and couldn't care less if her jeans got a minor strain. She just wanted to get home after some extensive work travel. We're annoyed, but she's livid.

Anyhow, just waiting to see what the outcome might be. Given the fog and the number of people they need to sort out, I'd say our chances of getting to Mordialloc for a 90th birthday tomorrow are looking slim at best.

Cheers,
Horatio

PS - Any other AFFers in the same boat?

Night fog in CBR ?

Cant say I ever experienced that
I did get caught a few times in the morning fog before they improved the landing system there around 2008 which made it a lot easier to land

Update: thanks to our livid friend, it looks like we might get to Melbourne tonight. She rang the premium line and found there were 30 seats available on QF1215 (last flight of the day). And she convinced the J lounge attendant to call someone and get them opened up (as I heard it).

So a bunch of us are holding boarding passes, and just hoping the weather is good enough for us to depart.🤞

Curious because all my years in living in CBR, fog rarely affected departure of a plane already on the ground. Delays were always limited because the inbound aircraft couldn’t land. Must have been massive fog.

Thing is, it didn't look that bad, noting my untrained eye and very small viewing range. Maybe different in the middle of the airfield.

But like you, @muppet, I've virtually never seen fog impact a departure. And I've also lived here a lot of years.

A bit foggy? At the time you wrote the above, the airport weather has the visibility at 150 metres. The limit for takeoff is most likely 550 metres.

Sorry, I guess, for the inaccuracy. Hard to tell that much from the windows in the J lounge.

When we were instructed to disembark about half an hour earlier, it genuinely only did seem 'a bit foggy'.

It's been a cold, foggy, coughpy day today in Canberra - very different to normal levels of coughiness. I do feel for you @Horatio having been on the end of cancelled flights due to weather, when all I wanted to do was just get home. I'm glad you got there.
