Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:


If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

The other issue is that there is only 1hr 39 minutes between flights if connecting to QF12. Is that long enough for connecting between domestic and international in LAX (especially for someone who has never been there before)? I guess that would mean no FLounge time unless the flight is delayed. Why does QF insist on only offering such tight connections?
 
Thanks. Yes, I'm undecided about QF74 vs QF12. Would be nice to try the FLounge in LAX whilst I have access to it.

Any ideas about QF73 (SYD-SFO) on Friday 6th October or Saturday 7th October? Are those good days to fly to the US for upgrade chances or not? An upgrade would be a big help for beating jet lag.

Both options very light, right now... in fact, if they were leaving tomorrow and you hadn't been notified of an upgrade, I'd tell you with confidence you could unpack your personal pyjamas! ;)

I'll let others who've done it more than me confirm... especially on newer changes to the airport, but I personally wouldn't chance it. I've never done more running to gates than I have in LAX.
 
Thanks. I guess I can pick either of those dates then. Good to know there's a good chance of an upgrade for the flight over at least. Worst case if I don't get an upgrade I can use the points another time.

I guess I could be best to either fly SFO-SYD or connect to the flights to MEL or BNE. Which would you pick of those?
 
What are the loads for QF74 SFO-SYD on Sunday 15th October? Still wondering whether to stay the extra day. The lounge situation is a bit better on a Sunday night, I think.

Thanks. Think I'll go with the Sunday flight then. Lower loads on the QF flight and only the one CX flight in the early hours of Monday morning will hopefully mean that lounge access is a little more likely.
 
I would be grateful if someone could check the loadings for QF9 on September 18th Mel- LHR and advise on the chances of an upgrade from Y to J. Ta in anticipation...

Open seats is good for seat selection, but not so much for upgrades... a sold out flight can also show limited assigned seats up until online check-in opens, so you do need to rely more on the availability numbers. That said - this flight was looking good. Availability in 'D' this close to the departure date suggests it is reasonably light. Availability in 'I' would have been even better. There's also good stock left in First, which means some of the revenue J PAX are almost certain to move up to that cabin as their upgrades are processed, leaving more space in J.
