Five trees for the axe

A number of trees in the City of Belmont will be cut down this Saturday after they were identified as airspace hazards.

A survey by the Perth Airport revealed five eucalyptus trees within the roundabout, at the intersection of Epsom Avenue and Sydenham Street in Redcliffe, reduced the take off and landing angles of aircraft.

Five replacement trees will be planted in Redcliffe Park during winter.

I really don't see how trees 1.4km from the end of the runway (and not in-line with the runway) can suddenly be a hazard. How tall would a tree that far from the runway need to be to get in the way? Also, planting replacement trees in the park that's significantly closer to the runway doesn't seem like a good long-term solution either but I guess it makes sense to someone from the council.

Whilst I agree with you, in this case it seems that the airport has demanded that the trees be removed therefore the decision is nothing to do with council but the responsibility of the airport.
