First time on Air Asia MEL-KUL

Can I ask your reasoning for using Air Asia to get to London? Price alone? Also, were the aircraft the same for the PER-KUL leg as the KUL-STN leg?

Hi Mr Maxwell,

Yes it was purely price. I can't stomach long haul economy anymore so my options were:
AirAsia Prem the whole way $3300 AUD Ret.
QF Prem Y $5000 AUD Ret.
J Return on Thai or Malaysian $6.5k AUD return. For almost half, I decided on the Air Asia X fare and it was good value for money (IMO) for what I got. Strangely enough I actually preferred the old (Air Canada) J on the a340, which they've now replaced with this hard flat bed.

I also flew to London with Air Asia but from Melbourne in March. My reasoning with the ridiculously low fair (purchased on sale).

I'm 6'3" and struggle to sleep on most flights, even our 19 hours of flying to Jo'Burg for the world cup with Singapore I only got about 3 hours sleep and I think that was exhaustion more than anything.
But I found the air asia flights, especially MEL-KUL to be quite comfortable.

The flight from KUL to London was more interesting with the old seat falling apart, First the seat pocket, then the arm rest, then the head rest :D
The flight attendant told me the plane was a piece of junk but they only had to put up with them for another year before they get new ones?

All in all though they were actually pretty enjoyable flights. I'm booked again in March 2011, hopefully the flight to london and back will be on a new plane.

Does anybody know how much air asia charge for an upgrade to the lie flat at the airport for the Melbourne to KUL legs?

Cheapest inclusive "promo" fare start from $348 return ex MEL.

Regular fare seems to be $587 and Premium (Flat Bed) is $1460.

Promo Fair is not bad at all. Just wondering if anyone has any experience in upgrading at the airport and what they charge there.
Just going off upgrades on other low cost airlines such as Jetstar who charge considerably less if you upgrade at the airport than the original fair.

I've seen them offering upgrades at check in for AU$300 or RM800, but not recently, and certainly not since they got the lie flat beds.

Thanks for the info. Air Asia X PER-KUL-STN in the premium seat is another option I've considered for going to the UK as I only require a one way ticket.

TRIP REPORT - MEL - KUL on Air Asia X (D7)
(apologies to those expecting a novel, this will be mostly point form)

Arrived for our 1240am departure at 10.30pm, booked in the lie flat seats for $682 one way.
Made our way to the premium line, no one ahead of us, straight through, checked in.

They are strict with regard to carry on. My roll on weighed 9.5 kg, so had to be checked in, my laptop carry bag was no problem weighing total of 5kg. Checkin lady suggested I could move things between bags, but ultimately that would not have worked. Opportunity to test premium bag tags anyway.

Made our way through immigration etc, weaved our way through the duty free stores, down to gate 9. Had a coffee at one of the cafes. Close to boarding time, and things were going to be delayed.

Having looked into D7 a little, I had found that they do have a good track record of on time performance, I was a little surprised that boarding had not started by 1215am.

We boarded at about 1220am, made our way to onto the plane, and even though the flight had a lot of pax, the boarding line moved and people were seated very quickly. I think that the restriction on the amount of carry on luggage may have had something to do with this as people were not scrambling for space over head and messing around with 2-4 bags.

Climbed into the seat of the A330-300, and was very impressed with the seat. Now I am not sure if this was one of the ex AirCanada planes (those in the now maybe able to tell me), but the seat was very comfy, not hard at all!

I was given a bottle of water by the host, and the staff were all very pleasant, smiling etc. We were then provided with a pillow and blanket prior to push back.

We ended up pushing back at about 1255am IIRC, then we were up and away.

No in flight TV, I knew this, so had pre loaded a couple of movies on my laptop, and also knowing there was seat power I was not concerned about my battery dropping off.
There is an inflight magazine (that must be left on the plane), and very little else. Also, by knowing this ahead of time, I had my own reading material. And the fact it was an overnight flight with an early morning start at the trade show I planned on sleeping anyhow.

The meal came out (included in the price, but you must make sure you select your meal when booking your flight, or edit your details more than 24 hours before the flight - No changes available less than 24 hours prior to departure - more later).

The meal, as stated in other discussion was not very large. I enjoyed it, chicken with a bbq sauce, some potatoe and rice and yucky string beans (I dont like them). I was asked when I would like the meal (now or later) by the FA very soon afgter the seat belt light was turned off. I opted for now.
Once the meal was delivered (and removed when finished - they are very quick with clean up) I put on my movie and pretty much passed out. I did notice maybe once or twice the cart went by offering drinks/snacks throughout the night.

No breakfast on offer, you are woken after descent has commenced, so not really hungry at that point, and busy filling out arrival card etc and not long till landing. Arrived about 10 minutes ahead of schedule, so made up some time in the air.

Made our way off the plane, no air bridge, and walked along the tarmac to the LCCT (low cost carrier terminal???) probably only 150 metres or so. We were probably parked the furthest away, but there were a number of other Air Asia planes already on the ground.

Got ourselves through immigration very quickly. Being let off the plane first was nice, but we took our time and plenty of others ahead of us, but the officers were processing quickly and 5 desks open.

Made our way to baggage claim, our tagged bags were already there waiting for us. Through customs, not any event there, then out to find our way to the centre of KL.

Experience on AirAsia X flat seat - highly recommended

Further note -if you want to get to KL, there were a number of options. There was a bus to take you to the other terminal and then train it in, or a taxi. Just after you get through immigration you will see a taxi booking desk. Simply pay them RM75.00, they give you a ticket that has your requested destination and make your way out of the terminal past McDonalds and all the other food places (LOADS OF OPTIONS) down toward the bus terminal. You will see the taxi rank in the centre medium strip. An attendant will direct you to a taxi. Give him your slip, and close your eyes, the drive is just over an hour, and a good chunk of that is sitting in traffic once you get into KL. Traffic and the way people drive is very different, and after almost taking out a policeman, 3 pedestrians and 2 motorbikes (all because the driver did not notice, or care the light had been red for sometime), I wish I had been asleep.

It turns out there are two taxi types (executive and the white/red or white/other colour) The executive taxis are normally blue, and nicer, but cost a little more - that is the one we took for our drive back to the airport)

That is the trip over - the trip back in next post

Trip Report AirAsiaX - KUL to MEL

About a day and a half before our return flight, we had decided that we would like to upgrade from our booked economy to premium/flat bed.
Logged onto the website, brought up the booking, but the little box to tick to upgrade/change flight details would not allow me to check it. I tried many times over a few hours and could not do it. I was not able to add luggage, or upgrade.
I tried again the next day, and was presented with the message that changes could no longer be made due to being less than 24 hours before departure. I was not able to cough luggage at this time either

Having read that it is possible to upgrade at the airport, figured we would try our luck then.

Our luggage was now a lot fatter, and I had not pre bought extra check in luggage at the time of booking, so had to stand in the very long check in line for economy.

Only two agents open to start with, we arrived 2 hours early. I stood on the check in line, and my friend stood at the sales desk which was also very long and slow moving. My friend got sick of waiting, so stood inthe premium check in line. Asked if there were any available lie flat seats. Was told there was one and they wanted RM6000.00 for it. So declined the offer, but not before asking if he could check us in anyway. The agent declined that request and back into the economy line we went. A third desk now opened, so we jumped into that line, paid an extra RM40.00 for each of our bags, and were on our way.

We should have eaten prior to going through immigration, as there are MORE options on the landside, so fill up after you have checked in... or even better if in economy one stand in line and another go get maccas or whatever tickles your fancy.

I did not mention earlier that you are not supposed to take food on the plane with you - I did have snacks on the plane in both directions. I am sure FA's had noticed, but nothing was said to me.

Anyway, boarding was on time, and push back was on time.

The flight was not packed, so we had plenty of musical chairs going on before push back, FA's did not really stop it from happening. So I secured a row of three on a window a coupld of rows ahead of my allocated seat, and so did my colleague.

I think if the flight was full, I would have preferred sitting in the 2 config at the rear of the plan.
So now we each had a row of three to ourselves. After the plane levelled out, and because it was a day flight we spent the next few hours working with plenty of room to move.
Rest time, I found it easy to roll my sweat top into a pillow and lean against the window and watch my laptop.
I got a little hungry so around 4 hours into the flight, so ordered spaghetti and chicken meatballs and 2 pack of krispy kreme donuts and a can of coke. Total was $AU11. Nothing flash on the meatballs, but my first choices of hot dog, pizza or sandwiches were not longer available.

FA's wheeled the trolley through the cabin maybe 3-4 times through the flight, but you could go to the rear and request food at any time.

Flight arrived on time. Made our way through the normal duty free etc, to collect bags. Bags not tagged this time, and of course ours were pretty much the last to come out this time. Luck of th draw I guess!

Customs line nice and short, except the rude woman deciding to answer her phone whilst we were on the path to exit (and was promptly scorned by the officer).

Summary, again, price was great, and so long as the flight is not full, and you really dont want to sleep, economy on Air Asia X is also quite acceptable.

I did not get to try the premium lounge on departue at KL LCCT, and to be honest, I looked for it, but could not easily find it - time was against me to get any value from it anyway.

Any questions - feel free to post.

My understanding is that the ex-AC planes were only being used on the STN-KUL (and maybe vv.) legs, and that even so they're out of rotation now....

Were the ex-AC planes 330s or 340s? ISTR them as 340s.

Nice TR and gives a god feeling for what to experience on AAX. Thanks for sharing.

And with regard to currency exchange - DO IT IN KL

We changed a little money at the MEL ANZ bank in the international terminal, landisde, and the rate was 2.55RM to 1AU, plus an $8 fee. The kiosk airside was the same price.

On arrival in KL, we could get 2.70RM, no fee at a Western Union Kiosk, and in downtown KL on Thursday night I got 2.84RM for 1AU, again no fee...

My suggestion, if going to KUL, change your money in KUL

The same is true for most places you travel.. you always tend to get a better rate in the country you're going to rather than the country you're coming from.

Nice TR on Air asia flat bed. My wife is travelling MEL-KUL in dec 2010 with our child on the premium lie flat bed. She is on a connecting flight out of KUL to India. Now i understand that Air asia operates out of the LCCT. How much time does it take to get to KLIA from LCCT and what is the best transport mode you would recommend considering she will be travelling with an infant.
She will be carrying only a carry on bag and a pram to avoid waiting for luggage.
Her connecting flight from KLIA is about 3.5 hrs from her arrival at LCCT. Will that be sufficient?
I am concerned because I am unable to travel with them.
Any info is much appreciated.

I had no need to go over to the KLIA, however, the train departs from there, and one of the options we had to get to the city via train was to take a bus over to the other terminal and take the train from there.
Others on here may have had this experience. It does not seem to be too far away (if one could walk over the runway), but I would suggest that it would not take too long at all. There is no real traffic issue at the airport, so it would come down to what frequency the buses run between the two terminals.

The only real option under the circumstances is taxi at a cost of MYR 42.30. I do this all the time.

Hi there

The bus from LCCT to KLIA is RM 1.50 takes about 20 mins and seems to run when it is reasonably loaded, I've never had to wait more than 10 mins for one.

The taxi option is probably the best bet though with a child.

Does anyone know if the aircraft have changed on the KUL-STN flights?
As I said before we took this flight in March on the old planes and I will be doing the same flights again next March, hopefully upgraded to the Lieflat if these flights have them in (They didn't then but the flights to and from MEL did)

I had great flights to and from KUL-MEL but the planes on the London route were very old and my basically fell apart on the flight from KUL, resulting in a move to another row.

Their inflight magazine had an article from their head pilot. He was quoted as saying that their entire fleet of aircraft is now less than 2 1/2 years old.

Good news. I had a look through the booking process and the seating is 3-3-3 like the flights from MEL-KUL so I guess the old pieces of junk are gone!

Also found a piece on their website that says the lie-flat seats will be on the London flights from June 2010.
