First Qantas A220 revealed

Dying to make a crossover gag about Fawlty Towers' Mr "Lick of Paint" O'Reily and Mr Joyce... but I shall contain myself (sort of)
That reminds me of the end of that episode where Basil is carrying a large garden gnome under his arm with the intention of inserting it into the respective character.

but seriously the A220 is a net positive for QF imo and a really good fleet decision I think. Not only to replace the ageing and ever more unreliable (sadly) 717's but to offer far more options fo the carrier. It actually should fix some problems but hardly all of them of course).

I'm really excited for the A220 era at QF tbh.
I don't think anyone is against the renewing of QF fleet, much needed and pax will benefit. If only Alan would've done it during his reign as in pay for it under his leadership.

Well, the orders were made during AJ's tenure, so.......

Yes with the full intention of the next ceo left to pay for them. He just dropped a little deposit, negligible.

Call me a cynic, but AJ was all about hitting performance / profit milestones and collecting the shares. Hence QF having a very old fleet.

OT apologies.

Well replacing the "very old" (now) 717's with 220's is surely exactly what was needed. Let's not forget that when AJ started in 2008, the orders were well in for the A380's (first delivered 2008) and the initial 787's was made in 2006 (the -8's that ended up with JQ).. and so one could use the same argument that the payment for these was made under Joyce's tenure. And of course Hudson was CFO during the latest round of orders for fleet renewal.

imo this is the nature of how it goes, and while I think there are many reasons to be cynical towards events at QF, specially with financing and the like, aircraft ordering is often a medium-long term affair that can often span multiple administrations.

And in this respect, if anything, the 220's have been long overdue but WILL address the aforementioned "very old fleet" - as the 32x series that will (slowly) replace the 737's will do the same thing.

tbh this isn't a case of Joyce leaving after ordering a costly albatross for QF. it's a clearly very good choice.

Fair chunk of the current fleet was delivered under his reign. He just didn't order much because he had been left a massive book.

Alan was CEO-designate for the first A380, CEO for all the 787s, even the majority of the 737s.

And I suspect Vanessa Hudson might not order any aircraft herself. Only being a few years younger than Alan, I suspect she may not be a 15yr CEO.

Any news/updates on when it might be put into service for it's inaugural flight? I see its likely going to be a MEL - CBR flight from previous reports.

I believe it only did it's first certification flight a day or so ago, with a couple more to follow before it is released to QF, so I wouldn't expect anything imminent.

Hopefully it is released to QF before the end of the month – though I have no idea how long these things really take. 😄

Will be good to see the A220 enter service for Qantas considering it is such a great aircraft.
For me it is crazy to think that today's Qantas had 140 aircraft in its mainline division in 2013 compared to 126 today. Current fleet age is 14.6 years compared to 7.9 years in 2013. This comes despite such a surge in demand for travel this past decade and obviously a much larger population to service.

I am surprised 'western swamp turtle' made the short-list. Expected to see 'dingo', but I guess that might be more suited to the name of a Bonza aircraft?
