First O/S Trip, Where to Go?

Several have suggested Bali, and for a group of young guys who like surfing that would be my choice, and with a 'relatively' short flight. There are some great surfing there, some great reef breaks and very cost effective for food/accom. Google 'uluwatu surfing' for some great photos of the break.

No way, as a general rule of thumb I DO NOT STAY AT BACKPACKERS, DORMS OR ANYTHING WITH A SHARED BATHROOM!.

Not spoiled, but perhaps uninformed?

There is "backpacker" accommodation available that is quite decent where you have a private room and bathroom. Some of the newer establishments would be cleaner and more comfortable than cheap hotels. In addition, some people actually stay at these places because they want to not because they have to. It's a great way to meet people your own age with similar interests.
