Hi all I'm off to Rome in may 2012 and am looking at the best cheapest first class ticket I also want to get Qantas status credits so all you brilliant People let me know how to best do this Thanks Wayne

Assuming you don't have the points to burn for F ASA

A simple F/J combo flying via LAX/JFK and back via London/Bangkok comes to $24,051 , possibly look at F RTW ticket.:?:

Edit: Can save $3.5k on that flying JFK-LHR-FCO rather than JFK-FCO direct.

The best option looks to be Emirates in F, but that doesn't earn SC obviously.

It appears Malaysian has F and can get you as far as Amsterdam, before you connect on someone else. As QF is sponsoring them joining OneWorld, there's a chance of earning on them before they officially join, but nothing has been announced yet AFAIK.

Other than that, both Cathay and AA fly there from HKG and JFK/ORD respectively, but only in J, so your best bet would look to be a flight to LHR and then J into FCO. As far as I can see.

Quick check on general May 2012 fares as follows:

AA: $US20,172. SYD-LAX (QF - First) LAX-ORD-FCO (AA - First and Business). FCO-LHR-BKK (BA - Business) BKK-SYD (QF - First)
QF: $A19147. All BA First
CX: $8,800. All CX Business!
BA: $13,050. All BA First

AONE4 from Sydney. $18,685 SYD-LAX-LHR-FCO-LHR-SYD (LHR-FCO-LHR BA Business Class)

BA Looks the best value F/J option , and QF must rub their hands together at the thought of selling a fare like this on all BA metal!

CX looks very good value too.
