Sorry if this is a newbie question, I don't have a lot of experience booking on AA metal.

I'm trying to book flights from SFO-BOS and return in first, but the only fare basis I can find is G,S,K or Y (economy?). This is occurring when I select either 'First' or 'First Flexible'. Am I missing something here? Why wouldn't a first class fare have a first class booking class?

Are you looking on an online booking site, or on AA.com? Booking sites often get fare buckets mixed up. It would be unusual for AA.com to make that mistake unless you're connecting on small regional aircraft with no domestic F (which is unlikely on that routing).

This is normal ... those used to be called "instant upgrade" fares.

Each segment will book into D or I class. You can see this on AA.com during tbe booking ptocess when you expand flight details before selecting.

To book a G fare into D, there needs to be availability in both fare buckets.

Failing that, seat selection should be of the pointy end.

Great, makes sense. I just went through the booking and put it on a 24 hour hold rather than paying, to force it to email an itinerary, and it has come through on an "I" booking class. So all good. Thanks for your help.

Just be aware that in the event of disruptions the original fare basis can come back to hurt you
