First Class Book the Cook suggestions

I think a lot of it is personal taste regarding what to order. i would imagine that Western is probably better out of MEL and Asian and Indian are better out of SIN.

The Lobster Thermidor is worth trying and I really enjoyed the Nasi Lemak. The satays in the TPR are delicious also.

Someone else can correct me if I am wrong but i am sure you can change your mind to the flight menu when on board.

Have made my first SQ redemption in F MEL-SIN-HKG. Now I get to go through the exciting experience of book the cook.

Any suggestions on what I should order? Do they tend to do better at a particular cuisine (e.g. Asian v Western v Indian), or is everything of a good quality? How does it compare to what comes on the ordinary trolley?

If I book the cook, am I barred from also ordering from the normal menu if I so feel inclined for extras?

Current menus here FYI:

exSIN: http://www.singaporeair.com/jsp/cms/en_UK/flying_with_us/suitesfirstsingapore.jsp

ex MEL: http://www.singaporeair.com/jsp/cms/en_UK/flying_with_us/suitesfirstmelbourne.jsp

not Indian! I've had it a couple times and it was very disappointing. Everyone seems to go for the lobster... but it's still airplane lobster. The Singapore Chicken Rice is supposed to be the pick of the dishes (ex SIN). TBH, I think the surprise on the day of reading the menu and what's on offer is preferable to BTC. Gives you something to do.

You can change your mind - but it's kind of wasteful. You're asking for a dish to be made, then thrown away on a whim.

or be a fatty and eat both - have done a couple of times.

roast duck out of SYD was good. and lamb shank curry ex SYD also good.

soups imo not worthwhile as serving sizes too small.

shameless plug for my blog below - plenty of photos of F meals.

+1 on the lamb shank!

Im new to SQ. I thought SQ suites/first provides caviar, but contacted SQ they said no caviar on MEL-SIN/SIN-MEL. Misses is a huge fan. Anyone knows which flights do they provide caviar?

jinjincai - Caviar service is easy to work out - SIN-MEL - 217 has full lunch service with caviar on menu - 227 has full dinner service with has caviar on menu - 237 dep SIN 11:55 serves supper only so no caviar. 207 is on 330 with no F cabin so moot.

MEL-SIN - 238 has full lunch service with caviar on menu - 228 has full dinner service with caviar on menu - 218 dep MEL 00:05 and serves supper only so no caviar. 208 again is 330 with no F so is moot.

I think I have that right - I have a fair load of Krug on board right now but always happy to help out.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Bumping an old thread.

First time travelling on SQ First and Suites LHR-SIN (A380) SIN-SYD (B777). I've booked the Lobster thermidor out of London and the Boston Lobster thermidor out of SIN for Lunch. Too much Lobster..? Of course, I know it's a very personal choice. Never had lobster.. I imagine it will be like prawns or Moreton Bay Bugs...? Should I be exploring the SQ menu a bit further?

Any other suggestions people would recommend. I did think about a steak, but perhaps am concerned about a dry steak. From reading this thread, chicken got some mention, but sounds too boring - is it really that good?

After many SQ F flts I just never BTC - always go with std meal unless early morning flt after brekky in TPR and brekky or brunch offered on board - then you need a change.

Lobster very popular choice but as I am allergic to crustaceans I cannot eat it - the steak on SQ usually quite edible - but don't forget whatever you order or are served meals in air can be just like any restaurant on the ground - sometimes you are just disappointed. But the good part about full lunch / dinner on SQ is the multiple courses - appetiser / soup / salad / main / dessert / cheeses - usually more than enough to satisfy hungriest pax even if one or two courses are not perfect for you.

And of course never be backward in seeking extra food - if it is available will be served to you very willingly - any leftover food is just trashed on arrival so it will be wasted.

i like disagreeing with cruiser on this one.

i always BTC and if i then fancy something on the a la carte menu then i'll select that instead.

We did have one unfortunate occasion where we missed out on first choice due to a full cabin, but can then always rely on the BTC.

another reason to BTC is on this silly supper/ sleeper services where they only serve you a rubbish continental breakfast. I want some hot food with my champagne at 6am!

FA's are always willing to please

If there is something better for lunch or dinner on the menu, you are able to switch to that and have your BTC for the next meal, even breakfast.

There is something quite indulgent having Lobster for breakfast.

Crew have told me (as I was tucking into the Beef Rendang with Ikan Bilis) they like it when passengers do not take up their BTC meal as then they get a chance at it. Perhaps they draw straws.
I think the discussion was regarding specifically the Rendang, Lamb Shank curry style meals. Incidentally I prefer to order this style of meal as SQ pretty much know how to make a good one, and I believe they travel better than lobster, steak etc.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions everyone. Helps refine my thoughts about this.

I'm getting a bit touchy about strong spicy food lately, so is the Curry Patta Lobster very spicy? Otherwise, it might be an option over the Boston Thermidor (though the Boston Thermidor is a whole Lobster, not just the tail).

I don't find it very spicy, but some may. I think that it depends on what you are used to.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

That Curry Patta Lobster looks very tasty - might have to give that a try.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

What is the difference between BTC and a pre ordered on the SQ website? How soon before the flight can meals be booked?
