First claim ever on travel insurance

So in the event of a claim with a TI policy, you have to tell them which credit cards you hold? And if you hold a card with TI, they can ask you for payment receipts to confirm that it was activated? In addition to making it way harder and more work, it seems like they're allowed to ask for a lot of financial info.

I'll be way more careful with pre-departure purchases that activate CC TI if I need a separate TI policy for some reason.

Most illuminating.

The insurance companies are supposed to decide the 'contribution' between themselves. This should not be an imposition on the policy holder. If the insurance company asks what they did of the original poster you can tell them to go jam it. That is their job, not yours.

Depends how you look at it.

Way harder for who? The insurance company? For them it’s potentially limiting their liability, so a small bit of work could save them thousands.

Harder for you? It could actually be a benefit it one policy doesn’t cover the claim, or the full amount of the claim. Or might might have a more generous calculation for cancelled award flights for example.

I book our flights and most accommodation on Amex (Chubb) no cover for pre existing medical.
Then book a few nights accommodation to meet to spend/activate criteria on Westpac ( Allianz) for pre existing medical cover @Happy Dude
Certainly if our claim was for medical, would need to go through Allianz.

In that situation @Flyfrequently, I think it's entirely unfair that either company would require you to do anything to involve the other - all things being equal.

If I'd bought the Allianz policy specifically for its medical cover but it also included other coverage (equal to the Amex) and I claimed for something non-medical, it's unreasonable for Allianz to expect me approach Amex to share the liability (ie effort has no benefit to me). And vice-versa. If I claimed from Amex for something, that they'd expect/require me to approach Allianz.

I assume that the medical policy covers just that though? ie nothing else. Otherwise being overinsured, even inadvertently, seems an unfortunate burden.

The Westpac Allianz policy does cover all the other stuff ie cancellation/delay/luggage etc but with the admin fee of $45 per pax with PEM, to get conditions accepted it is worth it @Happy Dude.
I don't consider it being over "insured" but for me "adequately" insured.
Interesting point to see what would happen should a non medical claim arise, probably go with Amex.....

As already mentioned, it’s not usual to have to contact the other insurance company yourself.

Over-insurance is potentially a waste of money, aside from being inconvenient. This would mostly affect folk who take out paid policies that only replicate their CC insurance.
