I'm planning to fly Finnair to Helsinki from Singapore via Bangkok, business class (> Singapore on QF business class) then onward to Russian cities again on Finnair.

Any opinions or tips Re seating, lounges and FF earn. Also opinions or experience on Finnair would be appreciated.

I've flown the AY98 SIN/BKK (back in 2000, admittedly) - J service was fair (had an old boiler for a Purser, but the other FA's were beautiful); but the food and wines were magnificent. Was in 4L back then (don't remember the type of aircraft) but seating was old (hopefully upgraded now).

NM probably has more up to date travel on AY in J, so I'll leave him to add further details.

I flew with Finnair in February - Paris CDG to Helsinki on an A320 and Helsinki-Bangkok-Singapore on an MD-11, both flights in Business Class.

My experience with Finnair was good. The service on both flights was superb, with the cabin crew constantly offering refills for drinks, water and nibblies. The A320 seat was comfortable for the 3 hour flight and although the MD-11 seat was old, I was tired enough to get 5 hours sleep on the 10 hour HEL-BKK sector. The old J seats are similar to the Qantas Dreamtime seat but without the electronic controls. Finnair are installing flat bed seats in Business this year. I understand the rollout will take place over the next 6 months, so you may be lucky and score an upgraded aircraft.

The lounge at Helsinki Vantaa Airport is very nice and they offer a buffet meal before the flight. I took advantage of the buffet, only to find that a full dinner was available on the flight.

Sorry, I have only used AY in economy on LHR-HEL flights. No experience on their long-haul J. For intra-Europe I would be happy to use AY for J or Y travel and consider them much on a par with BA. But for long-haul business class travel, their reputation is not as good as QF, BA, CX.

They are supposed to be upgrading their MD11 business class cabin and installing lie-flat seats. But I don't think they have actually rolled out the new seats yet.

But I am very happy to see you have chosen to go to HEL through SIN. But personally, I would choose SIN-LHR (QF or BA) and LHR-HEL (BA or AY) as my prefered routing in business class. But that may not be an option to you for this trip.

Thanks all, I shall give a detailed report after I travel and hope that the new seats have been installed.
