Finnair Plus is offering a status match to residents of Sweden until 2 November 2021. You would need to already have status with another airline headquartered in either Sweden, Norway or Denmark (which I think is basically just SAS?) and book a round-trip Finnair long-haul flight departing from Stockholm.

Not sure if anyone here will be able to use this. But if you're interested, the details are on the Finnair website:

This must take the cake as most restrictive targeted status matches ever! Hopefully other airlines don't follow down this path with significant hoops to go through.

You need to tick all of the following boxes
  • Live in Sweden (based on postal address).
  • Book a direct flight from Stockholm to Bangkok, coughet, Miami, LA or NYC on Finnair before applying.
  • You need to have Silver or above status with an airline based in Sweden, Norway or Denmark (this just leaves SAS or BRA).
  • All of this must be done before 31 March 2022 (apply before 2 Nov 2021).
  • If you/they cancel the flight you've booked then you lose the status they've given you.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I agree that this is restrictive, but this is squarely targeted at trying to encourage Swedish SAS members to give Finnair a try on its new long-haul routes out of Stockholm. It's not intended as a wide-ranging free-for-all status match.

I think VA claimed that title in 2018 for Australian government employees only who had Qantas status.

I didn't know that AY was creating a secondary international hub at ARN. What's their rationale?

Finnair previously had quite a large number of flights to/from China and Japan. Obviously with those countries still not excepting international inbound travel (without quarantine) they've decided to use the spare aircraft to temporarily launch these flights.

I say temporarily because they'll only run though to March/April next year (2022) and only to more leisure destinations including Bangkok, Puhket, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

It's also worth noting that the schedule is rather limited. BKK is only 2x weekly, HKT is 3x weekly, MIA is 4x weekly, LAX is 3x weekly and JFK is 4x weekly. It's also been reported that they won't be using Finnish cabin crew but rather through a local company that supplies cabin crew to airlines.
