Hi

I have QF gold status and will be flying Finnair coded flights in a few days time. Two of my flight are with Qantas metal but are coded Finnair (AY).

I have contacted Finnair and they say that as I am Sapphire level with OW and this results in having a baggage allowance of 2 bags for a total of 46 kgs that I can check in.

When I contact Qantas they say my baggage allowance is only 1 bag at 23 kgs. The issue is that the QF metal AY flights is my first flight out.

I would have thought Finnair is correct as it even says the baggage allowance on their website for OW passengers.

Does anyone know which allowance is correct?

Your checked baggage allowance would be whatever AY give you for travel on AY (marketed flights). What counts is how the flights are booked ie if they are booked as AY flights (even if QF metal) the AY allowance would apply. The airline whose metal the flight is really doesn't come into the equation.

A person with no OWE/OWS/OWR status flying to Europe on AY would receive one bag up to 23 kilos whereas a pax travelling on QF/EK would received 30 kilos which could be 1 piece at 30 kilos or 3 pieces at 10 kilos each.

Even though the first flight out is QF metal what counts is how the flight was booked/sold (ie sold as AYxx_) that determines the baggage allowance.

thanks ozbeachbabe.

Wish the QF call centre would be consistent and tell me the same thing.

And just remember that your points and SCs on the AY codeshare on QF metal flights will take forever to post to your QFF account and you should keep the BPs in case you have to make a claim.

We don't know why, but seems to happen all the time.

....
Unless the travel involves the USA, that is incorrect - it would be the metal of the "most significant carrier" (MSC) that counts.

What is important is the routing in order to assess the MSC.

This is as per IATA resolution 302.

What is the actual routing?

I think the majority of cases with AY bookings vua the EH hemisphere AY will always be the most significant carrier as the QF metal flight will be Aust to SIN/BKK/HKG then eg AY SIN/HEL/xx_ & vv.

Sure ... a TC3 to TC2 would likely be the segment deemed the MSC.

It is the metal on such a booking that is important.

What is important here is the allowance as shown on the e-ticket of the ticketing carrier.

But FF status additional baggage allowance does not show in the booking or on the e-ticket receipt. As a OneWorld Sapphire traveling on QF operated, AY marketed (coded) flight, my e-ticket receipt shows the baggage allowance as "1PC" (1 piece). So at check-in for the QF-operated flight, the QF agent is going to see 1PC as the allowance and the QF computer system will enforce that limit.

The additional baggage allowance due to OneWorld Emerald per the AY baggage rules is unlikley to be applied by QF as they do not offer any additional allowance to OneWorld Sapphire members other than QF Gold. The same goes for priority tags. QF check-in will apply priority tags for a QF Gold traveling on AY codeshare, but not for AA Plat on the same flight, even though the final destination is arriving on an AY flight and AY do provide priority baggage tags and handling for all OneWorld Sapphire members.

So for the return trip, when check-in is with AY and the final flight is operated by QF, the AY FF status based additional allowance will be applied along with the priority bag tags.
