I also notified admin immediately. Anyone who receives the more lurid type of spam would have found the OP's PM relatively tame, but it was still offensive and inappropriate. (I'm also assuming we all got the same message.) Re child protection issues, I think thadocta was referring to other PM correspondence with the OP, rather than the message which some of us got the other night.

True. But the point is, if you do one of these activities then they have a legal declaration from you that you weren't going to do so.

I imagine it is a technicality which helps during the subsequent legal process.

I received an extremely crude PM from mr 'horney' 69. Being the stout fellow that I am I simply deleted it and went on with my business. I would guess that I was not the only recipient of that garbage.

Damn, I should have gone through this thread with more detail because I had my MSN hotmail address added to this persons list. I accepted him but as per usual I blocked this person just in case I actually knew this person.

I do not know what he had PM'd to others but since my public email address was something like [email protected] (I have just removed it for this site), this person was probably hoping I was born in that year. I am Asian so I just added some 88 at the end of the address to meet Hotmail's uniqueness requirements all those years ago.

I am considerably older then that.

When I eventually decided to unblock this person after a few weeks, I asked him who he was. Here is an exact transscript of the message...

Your right on the money Alan. It's like getting Al Caprone on tax evasion, they could never prove he was breaking the other laws. I work for a government agency and we do it all the time, get them on breaking a statement rather than the actual law.

Another thing about entering the USA: I recently received an email from Qantas which said you MUST enter an address on your entry form to the USA. This was not news to me as I remember them harassing backapckers in Hawaii at least 15 years ago for not folling in their address - it doesn't seem to matter if it's accurate or not - they just want that box filled.
BUT I was wondering as I am travelling on to Vancouver on the same day I enter, will I be harassed about that anyway? Or is there a diferent form for transit passengers? As I am changing airlines I won't be checked through so will have to clear C & I. Will also do the same on the way back.
Dreading this part of the trip. Bring back direct flights to Vancouver!

I'm a bit surprised you say this. I've been the legal adviser to several government departments (general counsel in two) and it would be very hard to enforce a declaration in these circumstances. My advice is generally that you use a declaration to ensure that the person is on notice about something and can't claim not to have known about it, but don't seek to rely on the declaration itself.

For example, asking someone to declare that they will keep information confidential is not enforceable as a promise, but it does help to establish that the person knew that the information was to be kept confidential if you later want to sue them on different grounds.

While a lie in a stat dec is punishable as perjury, it only goes to your state of mind as at the time you made the declaration. So, if you made a dec that you were an Australian citizen, and you weren't, that would be punishable. But if you declared you were going to take out citizenship, and never did, then to establish perjury it would have to be proved that you had no intention of taking out citizenship at the time you made the declaration. If you explained that you had just changed your mind the following day, then it would be very hard to prove otherwise.

Incidentally, in relation to the original question which started this thread, most jurisdictions have a "spent convictions" scheme, which mean that after five years, convictions for minor offences are expunged from the record and need not be declared. What's included will vary from place to place.

I am traveling JFK-(BA)-LAX-(QF)-SYD next year. On the BA web site you can select seats. When doing this notification appeared that, due to the LAX arrival, they required "Advance Passenger Information" including details of the US address I would be staying at. The FAQ's indicated the following:

Q. What does "in transit" mean, and what should I enter if I am "in transit"?
A. "in transit" means that you are transferring onto another form of transport which will be taking you to a destination outside of the United States, and that you are not staying in the United States before you connect to this other form of transport. If this is the case you should enter the onward details into the first two address lines.

e.g. Transit on Greyhound Bus 1234
to Montreal, Canada
or Flight MX123
Mexico City, Mexico

Once you enter this you are presented with the following advise (as well as an option to print your API):

• You are advised to keep a copy of your Advance Passenger Information with you during your journey as this will help you to complete any entry cards which may be given out during your flight.

So I guess this follows for your card as well. Just ensure what you put on it matches that which the airline must now collect anyway.

I am often surprised at how nice the immigration staff are actually The long flight over gives me plenty of time to ponder paranoid fantasies of being locked up for writing the wrong answer on my form. When I get there they are nearly always nice to me. Of course I have had the odd old witch (many years ago) who was glancing at her packet of rubber gloves as she interrogated me.

coming into the US from Calgary last week i was served by a US official and we ended up chatting for about 10 minutes regarding the type of work i was doing in canada, and how he meets lots of very interesting people and has had some funny experiences as a customs official. it was a good chat and he seemed to me like a very nice bloke. it was a nice to meet him and i definitely appreciated the friendly chat.

there was hardly anyone in the customs area so there was no rush. i learned once again that it really is all about the person rather than the uniform

Yeah, i really watch that sort of thing. there are signs up advising not to use phones, camera, video/audio recording devices etc. it's even the same here is australia - although my impression is that they are less strict about it here.

i find it easiest to simply comply with all the requests when entering the usa along with a smile, a nod and the best crocodile dundee aussie accent i can pull off. i always say 'g'day mate' in a cheery way. my goal is simply to get through as quick as i can. i think doing these things help me reach this goal.

I don't see any Australian immigration officials in overseas airports. Or are they there anyway and only surface occassionally.

I've never seen Australian imigration officials overseas. But have heard rumours that in some countries they exist at the airport gate for some pre-processing.

As for American immigration, have seen them at a few airports. Rome comes to mind. There are others too. Someone will come up with a good reference as to why and further clarification as to my statements.

Better to get the "treatment" in Canada, I think, instead of getting it when you land at LAX?

By the way, the US Immigration people have been stationed in Canada since Colonel Custer was killed by the Sioux at the Little Bighorn.

Did not know that US Immigration people were stationed in Canada. Didn't the 9/11 tettorists go through Canada to get to US?

At the risk of going off topic Custer's title was Lt. Colonel but he eventually became a General. Was that after his death?
