I may be a bit of a nerd but I like to record details of my flights.

Once upon a time I had a note book where everything was recorded. But things have changed with the internet and I'm not as conscientious as I used to be!

I use the AFF flight tracker and feel comfortable with its little quirks.

My question is concerns historical flight information.

Are there any "free" sites where I can check the registration (tail number) of flights taken some time ago? It seems easy to find recent information (say for the past week) or so but anything earlier looks like requiring a fairly hefty subscription.

I believe you have answered your own question ... much is monetised these days unfortunately.

depends on the flight.

There's a site where you can look up historical details of LHR flights.
I'm not aware of anything else that doesn't make you pay to see data more then a week old.
