Just a quickie!

Our Au Pair is looking to go to Fiji in September and prices are around $750 return with Qantas - is this a decent price or should she hold out hope for a sale?

I've never flown to Fiji so wasn't sure how / if the price fluctuated much... and pretty sure it falls during school holidays... 15-23 September.

Any advice would be very much appreciated :)

Hi Joy6328

I booked some flights with Virgin for Brisbane to Nadi in August about 2 months ago during the sale for about $500 return in Y. Standard base pricing was about $650-$700 with Virgin and Air Pacific. Being school holidays I would be extremely surprised to see any sale or discounting for September. Just remember that all the Qantas flights are done by Air Pacific and it is sometimes cheaper to book directly through their web site rather than the code share arrangement through Qantas.

That sounds very good for school holidays, though I would NEVER fly AirPacific again. People tell me I just had a bad run with problems with all my flights INTL and DOM, but if she has the time, low expectations and it is cheap, why not?

It can be cheaper to book it as 2 x one ways / singles.

AirPac have a bad rep but I flew them last month NAN-MEL on the 737 and it was ok. IFE sucks, food looks bad but tastes ok, alcohol is terrible but that's everywhere in Fiji. Fly Virgin and you get none of those free anyway.

I would be hesitant to book anything on QF given the current issues they have with Air Pacific as an owner who provides their flights, two days ago they removed their directors from the board and at this stage things don't look good.

^^bump Any updates please, as I fly to Fiji bi-annually using QF flights, flying AP. Next scheduled trip, late December/January. Ty.

I would look at Qantas/Air Pacific or Qantas depending upon the times and cost at the time. -- I don't look at Jetstar.

I don't agree but that is individual. I put Air Pacific way ahead of Jetstar and consider Air Pacific are no worse than anyone else on a 4 hour flight. (JQ's schedule makes it 5 hrs so I'm not sure which way they go)

What about a JQ flight from SYD?
I would not travel JQ by choice (once again that's personal) but on most occasions, from my experience, they are as dear or dearer when baggage is added.

In summary I would look at which airlines are personally acceptable to you and then look at availability and flight times.

  1. Two by one way tickets are often cheaper than a return.
  2. Qantas are often cheaper than Air Pacific but not always, or
  3. Air Pacific may be dearer than Qantas but not always.
  4. When looking at fares home make sure you are aware if they are in $A or $FJ.
  5. On most occasions we travel one way with QF/FJ and the other with DJ.

Our next trip to Fiji is in Oct when it is expensive and the best deal over is a DJ Flexi fare($432 + 6450 points each) with a half price points upgrade to Premium.

An alternative is to go via NZ - I have done this in the past. NZ regularly have specials for AKL-NAN (I paid AU$88 earlier this year, often it is under AU$100) and fly a 772 up on some days, which is a very pleasant journey. If you combine with a cheap deal to AKL (which can be had quite often) then you can get a good deal. I have friends there though, so breaking it up and staying with them works. It might not work for other people, YMMV.

Now, that is a good alternative. My intentions are to visit NZ next year, so that may be another way around. I will certainly look that in mind, prior to booking. Ty once again, to one and all for all these helpful trips....makes prior to traveling so much easier.
