Good news;

Fiji Airways Plans To Fully Join Oneworld Alliance

Fiji Airways is hoping that joining the oneworld alliance will help the country further increase its tourism, as the airline is already the country’s largest generator of foreign exchange income.

If membership is approved, Fiji Airways would be the smallest member of the oneworld alliance.

“We already have substantial relationships such as codeshares with most of the four founding members of Oneworld so becoming a full member will take it to another level,”

I'm a little disappointed with that headline from One Mile. It'd be more suited to View From the Wing, given it seems any membership is quite some time away. We're still waiting on Oman Air and how long ago was that announced?

I read somewhere else recently Oman by end of this year? Can’t recall where though.

It needs to happen sooner rather than later. With QR's coercive behaviour in OW combined with QR's stakes in BA, CX, IB and possibly AY/AA (basically every major OW carrier except QF), it will be crucial for an airline partly owned by QF like Fiji to join OW so QF can have at least one friend at the table and have a chance of standing up to QR, provided QR don't buy into AY and AA.

I'm also surprised that FIJI is only joining OW now despite QF having a big stake in them for decades.

oneworld could end up being a Pacific rim alliance given that AA,QF,JL,CX,HA,AA all operate in that region. Only one of which is under the influence of QR.

Flying on FJ transpac on QF CR ticket in May.

Looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Some of its routes a welcome alternative away from LAX which I despise. Eg YVR-NAN-BNE

The Bula route is quite good! (especially on QF codes in J there and back).

What do you mean? There is also an equivalent Star Alliance “pacific rim” alliance existing with NZ, EVA, CA, OZ, ANA, AC and UA. Not sure what your point is.

And on your second point, QR have expressed interest in a stake in AA.

I think you need to chill about QR. Everything will be just fine.

QF is an active member of oneworld and the new CEO comes from AS, which QF has very good relations with. Also QF and AA are very close, they’ve even got Doug on the QF board now.

If anything QR has made a habit of making carve outs for itself within oneworld, which is the opposite of coercing change throughout the alliance and something QF needs to stand up to. That‘s just not how these things work.

In any case I don’t know how FJ joining is going to solve all the problems.

It will make it easier to get into the QF F lounge…🤫

But yeah, not going to solve the multiple ME crisis…

I’m not sure if QR being a member of OW while owning stakes in BA, IB, CX and potentially AA/AY is “fine” for QF. Almost every major oneworld airline will be partly owned, and influenced, by their main adversary that they have fought and have been fighting so hard against for over half a decade.

It should be oneworld, not oryxworld.

Doug sitting on the QF board won’t do much imo. Same with that former CX executive on the QF board, whatever his name is.

The addition of a carrier partly owned by QF is more than welcome in this current era of unprecedented QR dominance in OW.

These airline boards aren’t sitting around playing petty politics, they’re doing whatever they can do to make more money.

You think the board of AA will tear up the profitable JV with QF, for QR who (may) own a minority stake and absolutely no role in trans pacific routes for AA? Just ludicrous. Even the relations with BA have thawed somewhat, they codeshare and will probably get even closer once sunrise launches.

its really only two oneworld airline businesses that QR has shares in, IAG and CX. BA/IB is the same company. Even if that goes 3 or 4 thats still a long way from “every major airline”.

Really some sort of bizarre paranoia over QR by the poster. QR has no intention to take over the world, they are just shoring up their future and are no real threat to other OW airlines as it stands.
If UX is allowed into the fold it will give them another fairly minor player but that’s it. From what I understand the WY friendship is just that although there might be some shenanigans going on behind scenes by the sounds of it
