Hi all,

I'm being interviewed for an FIFO apprentice role next week (chef) and am wondering if anyone knows if mining FIFO apprentices get paid more then the normal rates as qualified workers do? Or if not do you know where I might be able to find this information? I would prefer to know before the interview as it probably wouldn't really be worth doing on the standard rate.

The job is with one of the larger corporations that hire FIFO people, I'd rather not say which one for their privacy although if thats important to finding an answer I guess it wouldn't hurt.

If anyone has had any experiences as a apprentice in that environment any other info would be great too as I've never worked FIFO or as an apprentice in general.

Thanks for your time!

A friend of my son just completed his apprenticeship with a mining company as a FIFO diesel mechanic....
His comments
i was paid alot more than any other apprentices because i was fifo, mainly due to the amount of hours worked a swing (around 80hrs a week for each week i was there) and the rate is generally a bit better, however...... most camps are ran by companies such as sodexo and i dont think they pay the best but i really cant say for sure

Happy wandering
Fred

I spent nearly 20 years in FIFO, my experience is that it’s rare for the catering to be done by the Mining companies and therefore you’d be employed by a contracting company.

The contractors pay rates have zero to do with the mining company.

My best advice, do your best at the interview, sell yourself as best you can but don’t ask about the pay rates just yet. Get yourself to round 2. I would ask about roster length initially though.

The time to ask about pay and conditions is after they’re interested in you.

Thanks, I didn't plan on asking about pay rates at the interview, it's a group interview anyway so probably wouldn't even get a chance. But yeah, I'll just go in and hopefully progress
