On the 1st of December there was a renaming of boarding gates at Rome's Fiumicino Airport. Gates G - H have now been denominated as E. The change has taken place in view of the impending opening of a new boarding area at Terminal 3, scheduled for the end of the year. During the transition period an advisory video is being broadcast on information monitors at each of the airport’s check-in counters, on monitors at boarding gates, transfer desks, on flight information monitors and on the monitors provided at the security checkpoints. Informative flyers are also available at all infopoints as well as airport staff ready to assist and direct passengers to their correct boarding area.

Cheers

FCO is currently an absolute disaster zone (although some may say that it always was) ;)
There are massive improvements under way and in the typical Italian style - will take twice as long than in most other parts of the world. They do promise a better experience but frankly anything could be better.

If you follow signs, this shouldn't have an impact. The frequent flyers may get confused at first.
My understanding is the OW lounge offering will continue to be awful.

I don't think it will be that confusing. All signs will be changed over. This is all part of renovation and remodeling works and expansion plans going on at FCO.

Now to confuse you… I think eventually the idea is to rename all terminals. The current Terminal 3 will be renamed as Terminal 2 and the current Terminal 5 will be renamed Terminal 3. Sound confusing? Well if you don't know Fiumicino Airport, yes. Just a quick explanation. As it stands currently, there's a Terminal 2 which is small. It sits awkwardly between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Eventually this will be demolished and absorbed by an extended Terminal 1. The current Terminal 3 and the new expansion works that will be completed late December 2016 together with Gates E (old Gates G - H) in the Satellite building should all be part of a renamed Terminal 2. When Terminal 5 will be remodeled and expanded in a few year’s time, that too should change name. As for a Terminal 4, there’s none currently. So this renaming should simplify things.

Cheers

I came through in Nov. Probably hesitated taking the shuttle train but then realised there wasn't anywhere else to go and everyone was getting on so followed the crowd. Then followed signs, it was ok. Not the worst airport.

I departed from from the old G H, I went to the AZ lounge but was told I was in either G/H and I needed to go to the other gates. Took train etc. When I originally looked at different priority pass lounges I wasn't too fussed about gates, but then you realise you need to take trains between the areas and you realise why you should aim for the lounge in your gate area.

It's well sign posted.

Although looking for the HIlton Airport was a slight challenge as the initial sign was only in one area, but once you got that was fine. I was smiling a bit as everyone says follow the signs which is true but there are a LOT of signs at airports! Hence the long searching stares of pax reading through them looking for theirs.

I thought FCO was ok.

Can't be any worse then CDG.
Been through CDG with AY and AF (different terminals, can't recall numbers), found it much more organised than FCO. Admittedly I've only ever done very early morning flights out of FCO so I wasn't the sharpest, but it was bedlam.

As someone who transits FCO at least half a dozen times a year, I find it quite functional and certainly easier to navigate than either LHR or CDG. And all terminals (even T5) are within reasonable walking distance, which is a definite plus. There is also a free shuttle bus if you're going to/from T5.

I must admit it did take me 2 or 3 visits to get a good feel for the layout of the terminals at FCO, and the fire in T3 certainly didn't help.
