Hi all,

just a silly thing - but was interested in what members thought of current paint jobs on the various models of planes in the air today. My movements (and thus experience) are fairly restricted - mainly Australia / South America / some Europe. I have a few favorites out there, by aircraft type: (I stick to widebodies as all the others are ugly)

747 - Qantas (nostalgic and classic red kangaroo)
777 - American Airlines (sheer might and perfection)
787 - Avianca (very clean and sharp red/white combo)

A380 - Etihad (beautiful and complex)
A330 - none - ugly aircraft
A340 - none - ugly aircraft
A350 - never seen one in the flesh

Any opinions or what should I look for?

3 continents don't look like to much restricted movement.

I quite like the new United/Continental, the gold stripe between the grey and white sets it off.

I agree "3 continents" sounds big - in truth it is really mainly Colombia (live there), and stopovers through Santiago in Chile, and the occassional trip through Madrid or London, on my way to my other home in Queensland :)

I like Air NZ's jet black 787. I read somewhere that the black pigment in the paint added almost 500kg to the weight.

And at the risk of sending the thread OT, what were Alaskan thinking with the thirsty salmon paint job? (Sponsor revenue presumably). It's a shocker.

Air NZ is usually up there on fav paint job, The Hobbit and the AB's theme come to mind.

I think it was Japan with a Hello Kitty that was cute for the novelty factor and they carried the theme inside the cabin as well.

Consider American. Their 'old' planes weren't painted - used the polished aluminium as their 'paint job'. With move to composite hulls, they now have to paint. Imagine the extra cost of that, across the fleet ( there is a tonne of paint on a A380 for instance).

And as for Alaskan - I love that plane!

Well it's actually the "Salmon Thirty Salmon II" and is a bit of a novelty livery to promote Alaskan seafood. Also a fair number of Alaskans and Seattleites are quiet intrigued/fond/proud of this plane.

its a shocker...but I cant stop looking at it...in the eye:shock:

These days my flying is domestic, and no surprise (to most;)), I love the roos evolution over the years. It is one of the worlds most iconic liveries/identities. I also do love the retro roos and flying art roos, past and present.

At least they are all memorable :)

Interesting your perspective of what is an ugly plane, the A380 is fugly in my eyes but the best passenger plane IMO and I agree with everyone saying the EY A380 is the most stylish livery on it.
For special livery that evokes an emotional response for me the Westjet Disney Magic Plane #1. #2 Frozen is OK but I am from the Fantasia generation.

Lol! That's the stuff dreams are made of! Well, my disney dreams :).

Otherwise yep - EY hands down for me. They take a triangle, shades of bronze and turn it into pure elegance. Warm colours, simplicity - just makes you feel at home.
Of course I'm an NZ fan and although I miss the blues of NZ there is no mistaking the blacks in the sky and yes hobbits! Very cool :)

I quite like the new tail livery on PNG Air (ex Airlines PNG). I only have a coughpy pic though.
