Why are there for eg Qantas so many fare classes, and how do you understand all of them? What do the unwashed masses need to know about fare classes? You guys talk about class Y and O, how you want this or that even tho both are economy seats - what's the secret?

the difference lies in availability, price and fare rules. For example an O fare earns "discount economy" status credits while a Y fare earn full economy credits. An O fare is not able to be upgraded with QFF points, while a Y fare requires less points to upgrade than say an M or L fare.
