Famous people met/seen while flying v2

Given that the original thread of this name was locked after a bit of turbulence 8) , I thought I'd start another as I've just been on board with another "famous" person.

I was in the F lounge in SYD T1 and could hear a very familiar voice talking close by, but could not see who it was and thought nothing more of it as I had work to do.

When I boarded QF31 about 30 mins later, I found myself sitting in the same cabin as former PM Bob Hawke. The staff fussed over him a little more than the other pax and he was also visited by someone from the flight deck before we departed.

I was tempted to go over and say hello during the flight but he skipped dinner, got into his PJ's and hopped into bed not long after we departed, and the crew woke him when the captain announced that we would be landing in 30 mins, so there was never an opportunity. I was leaving the flight at SIN and I gathered that he was going on to LHR, so I hurried off rather than dawdle off with the pax who were getting back on board. I was first to the immigration desk (which is a first for me ).

Yesterday flew with half a dozen high ranking tennis players SIN-AKL. Given the size of their tennis bags (which they all refused to check in), overhead bin space was at a premium.

I wouldn't have recognised them. I was in a restaurant sitting next to Tim Freedman (The Whitlams) - I had no idea who he was.

I must admit it was the guy with me that picked the first two and the third I only recognised when they PA'd him in the QP.

I'm the same - I don't recognise people usually, especially "out-of-context" in a plane... but I did recognise these people in domestic in 2005:

Sat next to Rob "Milsy" from Australian Idol in Y - he really loves the attention and kept standing up and strutting for people to recognise him...

Sat next to Malcolm Blight (had no idea who he was since I never followed footy). He told me he was a commentator - I asked him which radio station - he said "urmmm.. channel 10... I used to play, won a few premierships, coached a few teams to win premierships, won a brownlow medal..." So I say, "I see, you must be quite into your football"!!! Really nice guy though!

Sat next to Dennis Lillee - I knew I had seen him from somewhere, then thought I saw his name on his ticket as "Dennis Little" which I thought sounded really familiar. Had a good chat, I asked him what he did for a living (which I think he was a bit surprised by!) and he told me "umm promotions, mostly... and specialist coaching" which I thought meant he was some kind of corporate coach. Had a great chat with him (and finally clicked who he was!).

Sat behind Magda Szubanski - now she I recognised straight away! She is just hilarious...

I've never heard of him either. Just goes to show that some people are legends in their own lunchbox.

Now that is one person I would recognise. I used to go to a lot of cricket matches at the SCG in my younger days and loved watching D.K. Lillee bowl.

Nope - was QF MEL - PER. I believe John Farnham was also on that flight but didn't see him. I think they were on their way to Perth for their performance of Grease.

She actually held the flight up slightly cos she was drinking with friends in QP and didn't hear the flight being called - I would have loved to see her running to the gate - that would be a sight! How could anyone get mad at Magda!

I saw Matthew Hayden and Michael Kasprowicz in the BNE QP on Monday morning. The staff member who called for Kasper over the PA is obviously not a cricket or rugby fan - it took a few attempts to get the name out.

I didn't actually see what he looked like, but my SYD - BNE flight yesterday afternoon was "driven" by one Captain Peter Garrett. No singing or political speeches though. :roll:

I flew across the aisle from ex-PM Bob Hawke on QF31 SYD-SIN on 07/01/06. He was going on to LHR.

I assume he gets his F tickets for free.

The entitlement under the Member of Parliament (Life Gold Pass) Act 2002 is summarised as follows:

An entitlement to a cap of 40 domestic return trips for former eligible Prime Ministers
Travel to be "not for a commercial purpose"
Travel is by scheduled air, rail, bus, tram, ferry or vehicular service or on a combination of these scheduled services
Travel is at the class determined for serving parliamentarians, currently First or Business Class. The Remuneration Tribunal determines the class of travel for serving parliamentarians
Accrued Frequent Flyer Points to be used to offset future travel in line with government policy. Any Points used in this way will "count" against the entitlement cap

there is a captain that flies for Qantaslink out of Brisbane whose name is 'Rowan Atkinson' ... i have been on his flight a couple of times and always smile to myself.

i'd be pretty confident he has heard all the jokes ...

That sounds about right. Serving Parliamentarians should have their life suspended until they retire from Parliament .
