Falling out of love?

I'm not sure if I'm following all of this but since I was status matched to VA platinum a few years ago they've certainly done damn well out of me! Smart play by them. As to on day ODU's in J my wife got one in the lounge a few weeks ago, are they not strictly meant to occur under VA policy?

VA do not release the J seats for late upgrades.

They strictly inventory control them the whole way through.

Silly IMHO but they are concerned about devaluing them.

Personally - I think you can keep it tight but then open them up to allow ODUs.

I can relate to this.. I couldn't upgrade using points or my plat upgrade when I put it in 2 months ago. I got one done but had to split the booking so +1 got the upgrade and I'd sit in Y. Luckily I was able to upgrade at the lounge on Friday night, the kicker being we got on board and there were 3 of us in J...

And I have to say the meal was average.. And it was the same meal coming home...

If it were my comments that prompted your response, I'd say that like I've said many times, I do think genuine SMs are a very wise business decision for any service business wishing to lure across the oppositions clients. What I disagree with is the almost desperate look of continual SMs ........"any one else, please, come on we're worth it, please give it a try, pretty please, c'mon I'll promise you you won't have to really fly with us and we'll give you status for another year".......that's what I'm opposed to, especially when they totally ignore their BIS fully funded status clients simultaneously!

Not at all. VA do allow lounge upgrades.......as long as there are upgrade bucket fares still available. What annoys many of us, is that we can apply for upgrades and be told no seats are left, but jump on board and even see in the extreme 8 J seats available....almost like VA decide that if there are no paid seats, why provide the service to upgraders. Not so extreme is to see (regularly) 2,3,4 seats spare but no upgrades available.

What about an EY status match to your QF WP which gives you lounge access & checked luggage foc?
There's a thought.

No checked baggage does not cost $23. Buy a saver fare instead of a saver lite. On ADL-SYD the difference is generally about $10-$15. The difference SYD-BNE/ool should be about the same.

Then there is the cheaper price on with VA. My average fare is about $24 lower on VA than QF.
You are right. Difference between Saver Lite and Saver only around $9-$10.

I know we don't agree on this but but my preference is to travel Qantas where the difference between the 2 airlines is only $15-$20. It is only when Qantas wants $146 per flight I start to look for alternatives.

I agree about the level if price difference. And my averages show there it isn't that big. But as you say those averages are made up of flights that can be $60 to $80 difference in price. An extra $10 if one needs to check a bag is nothing

Now where we disagree is that I see both airlines as basically the same. Especially for a 1-2 hour domestic flight.

It is OK to disagree. We all see things differently.

The big one for me is the type of person that flies Virgin and scattered around the cabin especially near me. I don't want to listen to their conversations. I don't want to see how they dress. I don't want to see how they behave in public.

I am largely shielded from these things on Qantas and this is very important to me.

The type of person? Well the people I see around me on Virgin flights are largely the same half dozen people I see every week. Even, heaven forbid, someone with a P1 qantas bag tag.

I assume that this post isn't serious?

Have you been on a train recently?

That type of person.

I'm gonna have to go with "Sad"

... any other term i use to describe this line of thinking won't pass the moderator test.

I'm not sure which type of person JohnK meant but I don't care much about people who do things I can look away from (such as feet on the bulkhead etc.). The one thing that really bothers me is screaming babies, which even my fancy Bose NC can't shield me from.
I may have just been very lucky over the years but I don't see (or hear) many babies on QF Dom flights (including weekends and public holidays). I can only assume that many families prefer to fly on LCCs like VA or JQ which are usually cheaper.

Even, heaven forbid, someone with a P1 qantas bag tag.

They probably bought it from eBay :D

You need to catch some of the same qantas flights as me. Plenty of families. Even in row 4 of 737s!!! shock horror

Doesn't explain how that same person always gets row 4 on qantas plus a shadow. Perhaps he buys that on eBay as well.

My favorite is the girl in row 4 on QF with her feet on the J armrest the entire flight.

Was just about to post that we always flew QF when our kids were babes in arms including on weekends and public holidays.
We split our travel between VA and QF now due to having status on both (kids only have QF status).
