But what happens when you go to priority check in and you dont have status, just a ebay purchased tag to look good?

All hat, no cattle as they say.

Probably exactly the same as what happens when with priority boarding. They just serve you.

Some people are just collectors of tickets to old events, too. I've been to the Henley Regatta in England a few times (sometimes in Stewards, sometimes not) and the members of the Stewards Enclosure get an colourful enamelled members badge each year, like racecourses do too sometimes for members. Collectors can buy old ones on ebay (the 1992 one is particularly attractive, I think). Buying Q-tags strikes me as being no different.

You mean theres a market for my 1989 U2 & BB King Sydney Ent Centre concert ticket?

Quite possibly. It's amazing what people will do with their hard-earned...

..... noticed the shinny white Platinum One tag on his suitcase....... . he said he purchased it on ebay, basically so people will think he is WP1....

Why doesn't he go the whole way and just buy a Qantas pilot's uniform?

Another observation is the following: The tags only do something domestically, yet to get P1 would IMHO be something truly rare for anyone who does not do bulk international travel - so what is the point of P1 tags? If someone flies domestically enough to get P1 I would assume that pretty much all ground staff and flight crew would recognize the pax, not their tag!!

If those super smart coasters are so super smart and can be tracked, then Qantas should be worried why my luggage has ended up in a wheelie bin.

I flew to P1 solely through domestic travel! :)
