To be honest with the sun smart message I am surprised we aren't wearing them here. Sunburn is not fun, and failure to apply it in the wrong place really hurts (especially on a day time trek up Mt Kosciuszko from Charlotte Pass.) Failure to apply sunscreen to the back of the legs REALLY HURTS! I now wear trousers if out all day long in the sun, even most Darwinians think I'm crazy.

Pale European and North Asian skin is great for sucking up vitamin D at high latitudes. However, it is a negative in Australia for the most part if we spend anytime outside.

AFAIK many Chinese women prefer the palest skin possible because a darker skin can be an indication that you are a 'peasant' (i.e. tan obtained by working in the fields all day).

I remember my year 7 teacher proudly telling us that except for the fact we'd all die horrible deaths, he'd recommend that we didn't cover up, so that our genetics would start producing more melanin so that over a number of generations we'd develop black skin, which is what we need to better adjust to Australia.
