I've not seen anyone talk about this yet, so I am wondering is it just me that is seeing it?

I have a facebook "Like" button as of this morning at the top of all threads.

Is this a "feature" or an "enhancement"? (programmer joke)

A few days ago there was a Facebook Connect button at the very top of the page, this is now gone however. I think you’ll find admin is experimenting with different features to see what works best. So there wont be an official announcement unless he decides to keep them as a feature.

I’m not seeing it though.

Facebook recently announced changes to its privacy settings so that the permissions you give can be used on forums, such as this, I suspect the change is to take advantage of this facebook privacy "enhancement" along with new features that came in April:

Facebook's New Features and Your Privacy: What You Need To Know - PCWorld

Thx for the link markis10 - will check it out properly over the w/end. I got alerted to this 'enhancement' by someone on FB, and have disabled it till I understand fully what it is doing. I do wish these things were opt-in rather than opt-out.

Absolutely!

The main issue is for me it appears at the top of every thread.:-|

I don't even have a facebook account; and probably never will!:(

So maybe a job for Adblock Plus which can block the access to FB before it even leaves the browser. That way the content filter blocks wont come to anyone's attention. Alternatively the element-hiding feature of ABP would at least remove the annoyance factor of the filter message being displayed.

Richard.

Good idea - I had initiated the element feature, but better not to bring it to attention (although with thousands of employees having internet access it would be unlikely).

Yes, the FaceBook "Like" button was implemented earlier this morning on a trail basis. (After testing it for a few days on our test site)

You can read about it at Connect with your friends on your favorite websites | Facebook

Its basically a way of sharing information on AFF with your FB friends. If you click the button, a link to the relevant AFF post will be placed on your FB profile and feed, and therefore be visible to your FB friends.

On the AFF site, if someone clicks the button AND is your FB friend, you will see their FB name next to the click. If they are not your FB friend, you should just see a counter, not the name.

If you don't have/ don't want to have/ don't like FaceBook, simply ignore. The button only appears on the 1st post of the thread.

Lets see how it's used on AFF before making a final decision.

Another option would be to place an entry in your local hosts file pointing the hostname to 127.0.0.0. But that will stop you getting to Facebook from that computer, which sounds like it would not be an issue in your case.

Already done ;) - for some sites I have to employ IE :-|

Wow - I didn't realise you spoke Martian NM ;)

Mr!

If anyone has a good AdBlock filter to kill this one without breaking Facebook, I'm all ears.

I don't mind the feature, but I don't like where it's displayed.

Might be better pushing it over towards the top right of the post's box so it doesn't get in the way, particularly for those of us who scan read. It just gets in the way otherwise.

Failing that, a control panel option so I can switch it on or off permanently.

Mrs NM often thinks I can talking Martian when she listens in on my work conference calls :p

I usually get that from Mrs munitalP after leaving 18o6 MEL drinks night - even I think Im talking Martian at that stage

Mr!

I have to say I’m not seeing a button on any thread. I wonder why I’m different.

Ahh, the button appears on “PC Mode”, but not the “Alternative PC Mode” that matches the sites official colours more faithfully. I see there’s also a Twitter button at the bottom of the “PC Mode” theme, but not on the “Alternative” theme. There might also be other things missing that I’m not seeing, but I do like the original look and feel with blues and reds more.

Thanks Sam I was getting ready to stop drinking and head to the doctor as I could not see the button anymore.

I view in Alt Mode so that explains it.
