FAA grounds 737 Max 9 Aircraft Indefinitely after Alaska Airlines incident

NTSB Chair is urging parents to get a separate seat for their infants (with a car seat) and not sit in their parents lap. I wonder if that might become a policy change.
I did that for the twins where they were car seat size. Yes 2 car seats.... The problem we encountered was the airlines dont make it easy for parents to bring on car seats. Also there is often no top attachment - just the lap seat belt to secure the car seat to the airline seat.


how many childrens lives would have been saved last year? Probably none.
IMO lap infants should be actively discouraged or banned. There is no physical way anyone can hold on to an infant in conditions of massive acceleration. If they need to be secured in a car seat in a car they should be similarly secured in an airplane. Safety briefings require that on takeoff and landings bags be secured - you can't hold on to them under those circumstances . Why is a lap baby any different.

For takeoff and landing, aren't infants on laps required to be belted in to the seatbelt of the adult using using an extension seat belt/restraint? So not the same as just carrying a bag.
 
I see that AS is now offering a flexible travel policy for tickets they sold. Flights can now be changed / cancelled without a fee.

Unfortunately, this does not apply to tickets sold through a 3rd party. I'm guessing that applies to people like me, who got their flights via QF.

Time to research alternatives before contacting Qantas.

This has been the case since COVID for most US airlines (although fare difference would be payable).

What is changed is that no Fare difference will apply under this waiver.


Interestingly, AS have varied their unaccompanied minor policy.
Additionally, January 7–9, 2024 children traveling alone will not be accepted on flights connecting in Seattle (SEA). Children are allowed to travel as unaccompanied minors if the final destination is Seattle (SEA) or if the child is connecting to a Horizon or SkyWest flight.

Edit: the story says it was found in ‘airplane mode’ so maybe the finder then enabled network access.
Which then prompts two important questions:
1. Why wasn’t it screen locked?
2. Why is it in SOS mode if found near the city of Portland?

That's not possible. iPhones can't survive a 2 meter drop.
 
Stating the obvious here I appreciate, but if this is accurate (in terms of the plug doors never having been touched since installation), then this reflects really poorly on Boeing and their production line. Seems like a pretty fundamental error - the screw is screwed in and torqued appropriately, or it’s not.
Yep. And if true, it has to call into question the safety of *any* aircraft rolling off their production line. Boeing is already dealing with a number of quality-related issues. The whole de-icing problem across all Max models for example...

But naughty iphone owner, It was not in airplane mode.... (if indeed it fell out of the aircraft)
And I cant see how the finder can unlock the phone to take it out of airplane mode
 
Maybe time to change to old meme "if it's not Boing, I ain't going" to drop the 'not' :)

One thing from this incident, it's pretty apalling that the US requiremnt for Black Box recoding is only two hours. After which it overwrites. What is the Australian requirement?

Or does it not matter because all the data is sent back to base via wifi etc connections?
